NRL taking a kicking

In the glow of 4 straight Warrior wins, it's pretty easy to think things are pretty good in the NRL right now.

But it's taking a PR kicking. We've spoken about the Blake Ferguson issue in the Origin thread. George Burgess is in shit with Cairns police for smashing in a cars windows with a street sign (he was in Redlynch for fuck's sake. That's like a player visiting Wellington, playing at the stadium, staying in the city, and getting arresting in J'ville).

But the worst one of the weekend was the Dogs v Manly at Brookvale. Story is Ben Barba and Dene Haletau were spat on by fans as they left the field after the game. Accounts i have heard was these same individuals then verbally got in to Barba, calling him a wife beater, and wanting to fight him in the car park. Frank Pritchard's wife was allegedly told to fuck off back to her own country and get off Centrelink. Classy stuff from the Manly "faithful". Dogs fans are far from angels (pretty widely acknowledged to be the most hostile in the comp) but they have a point that if the situation was reversed, a lot more would be being made of this.

The most useless creation ever, the NRL's "Integrity Unit" is investigating all events. I expect fuck all to come of it.

I read a story that NRL viewership is down significantly across the board this year as well. Just after Ch9 forked out a fortune for the rights.

How would you like to be on the NRL executive this week?

Confederations Cup

For those with short attention spans like me, it has been great to follow both the ICC Champions trophy and the Confederations Cup - two short and sweet tournamnents. There has been some good action in the Confederations Cup so far. Neymar's goal against Japan was a beauty:

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_AdeVmYfehw

Tahiti being there (at NZ's expense) is a bit of a farce though and Nigeria didn't even look like they were trying. I doubt NZ would have done much better. I do wish FIFA would just fold Oceania into the Asian confederation. They could then have the runner up from the WC join this tournament making it more interesting.

Best Test of The First 500 call for nominations

As flagged in the countdown to 500 thread it seems like there is a bit of interest in doing a tournament to find the fern's favourite test of the first 500.

Here is how it will work:

4 qualifying rounds of 10 matches for each of the first set of 100 tests (the first 200 will be combined as I expect we will struggle for nominations for pre-war rugby except that bloody Deans try).

Then the top 2 vote getters from each round and the two highest third placed vote getters will progress to the final vote (there won't be semi-finals or quarter-finals as it seems inappropriate for determining anything to do with the All Blacks)

To give you an idea about time frames the rounds will be:

1-200: vs Australia, Sydney 1903 - vs Australia, Christchurch 1982
201-300: vs Australia, Wellington 1982 - vs South Africa, Christchurch 1996
301-400: vs Australia, Brisbane 1996 - vs Australia, Auckland 2005
401-500: vs Wales at Cardiff 2005 - vs France, Christchurch 2013.

Some really competitive brackets there particularly the 301-400.

So basically just name your favourite All Black games - no limit to nominations, I will bracket them up and we will start with the first round toward the end of the week. Name as many as you like - even hidden gems that we may have forgotten that weren't necessarily the best of all time - but perhaps the best of their season.

Also if some of the...uhm... more senior members of the fern can help with the first bracket that would be appreciated!

This is not a piss take.

This is not as desperate as callingup Andy Irvine (then leading a fans tour in 2001) up to the bench for a test match.

But is it true.

Shane Williams has been called out of retirement for the Brumbies game. Flies in on Sunday, trains Monday, playes Tuesday.

Along with Wade and Barrett they all slip into the starting side due to the injury crisis (i'm pretty sure it has to be called an injury crisis by law now)

Team
Lions team: Rob Kearney, Christian Wade, Brad Barritt, Billy Twelvetrees, Shane Williams, Stuart Hogg, Ben Youngs; Ryan Grant, Rory Best (capt), Matt Stevens, Ian Evans, Richie Gray, Sean O'Brien, Justin Tipuric, Toby Faletau
Replacements: Richard Hibbard, Alex Corbisiero, Dan Cole, Geoff Parling, Dan Lydiate, Conor Murray, Owen Farrell, Simon Zebo

Good back 5 to the forwards, the centers will at least have played together and know the defensive system, and the back three, while crap defensively will be pretty to watch on the attack.

Champions Trophy: NZ vs England

On tonight, coverage starts at 9.15pm.

If we win we are through, and if it is a wash out we are through. If we lose, there are all sorts of different calculations that will come into play to decide which teams go through.

England have been shrouded in controversy after ball tampering allegations. However there doesn't seem to be any hard evidence, and the Umpires have not lodged any complaints. A nice little distraction for them though, as the media appeared to be hounding Giles on it.

Southee is in doubt but Elliot is fit again, so may take his place in the side. Or they could go with Bracewell or Butler. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing big But getting a run. Really hope Rocnhi can get a score, would take a lot of pressure off Guptil, Taylor and Williamson.
Lyprinol—a pretty well regarded product based on the oil extract from the NZ green-lipped mussel - is widely prescribed by doctors to aid young children and adults with troublesome asthma. Is this the world's weirdest sport?

Just before the whistle blows, it occurs to me that this must be the weirdest sporting event I've witnessed.

Not only because of the sport itself - this is elephant polo in Thailand, fairly similar to traditional polo on horseback but slower paced and with the players using much longer mallets - but this is a particularly weird match of elephant polo.
It's not just the animals, it's the players. On one side, a team of former All Blacks - giants of men, still fit and competitive. On the other side, a team of katoey - ladyboys - from one of Patpong's famous cabaret clubs.
It's the most unusual match-up in a series of matches played over six days at the King's Cup Elephant Polo Tournament in Hua Hin, south of Bangkok.
This match is just an exhibition game for a bit of fun but the All Blacks, including former lock Robin Brooke, have been playing in the real tournament - with limited success.
In elephant polo, each elephant carries two people - the driver, or mahout, who already has a strong relationsh ip with his animal, and the player, who is responsible for swinging the mallet.
Most of the players, except the All Blacks and ladyboys, have experience in regular polo, though one player says it doesn't help much.
Being on the back of an elephant puts the player much further away from the ground and the length and weight of the mallet also makes it quite difficult to give the ball a decent knock.
Nevertheless, the goals come thick and fast. Once the ball is hit, it's very difficult to stop it as the mahouts guide their lumbering beasts around the field.
The home of the tournament is the resort town of Hua Hin, about three hours' drive from Bangkok, traditionally the holiday home of Thailand's royal family and a popular weekend escape for Bangkok residents.
But, while it has plenty of high-rise hotels, fine sand and warm ocean water, it's not crowded with tourists the way some of the country's other hotspots can be.
The tournament is put on by resort operator Anantara, which is keen to point out that the event, which raises money for Anantara's Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation charity, takes the welfare of the elephants seriously.
The company says all elephants in the tournament are domesticated, having been rescued and moved to Anantara's elephant camp in the north of the country, or taken from the streets with their mahout for the duration of the tournament, giving them an opportunity to be well fed and receive medical check-ups.
This last point is important as the plight of the domestic elephant in Thailand is a sad one. Once gainfully employed throughout the country in farming and forestry, domestic elephants and their drives have gradually been replaced with modern machinery.
This makes both elephant and mahout unemployed, seeking income from street performing, despite the practice being outlawed.
Elephant polo originated in Nepal where the sport took off in the early 1980s. It is now played in Nepal, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
While many of the rules follow those of traditional polo, there are some key differences. Due to the size of the elephants, there are only three animals per team (compared with four horses in normal polo) and there are a few quirky rules.
For example, picking up the ball (which an elephant may occasionally do with its trunk) is a no-no and will result in a penalty.
It was not such a problem in the earlier days of the sport when soccer balls were used instead of polo ones. But that led to another problem - the tendency for the elephants to kick or stomp on the ball.
Before the tournament starts, I get a chance to go "backstage" (back paddock would be more accurate) and meet some of the elephants.
They vary in size and age but we're told that only young, energetic animals are allowed to take part. This brief visit gives me an opportunity to see the rapport between the mahouts and their animals.
At one point, a mahout leans too far over and his sunglasses fall from his head to the ground. He whispers a word to his elephant and the polite pachyderm quickly picks up the glasses with its trunk and passes them back to him.
Back on the field, the Ladyboys and the All Blacks are slugging it out. The Ladyboys have been given a head start but the All Blacks are rapidly catching up.
Many of the teams - named after their corporate sponsors including Citibank, Johnny Walker and Mercedes-Benz - take the event quite seriously and, even though it's only an exhibition match, the All Blacks are no exception.
The All Blacks win and avoid facing headlines of "Ladyboys beat All Blacks". I retire to one of the marquees for refreshments.

NRL: Warriors Vs Roosters part deux

It has been a week for the Warriors with signings, releases, possible re-signings and possible non-signings.
First the club signed young Sharks halfback Chad Townsend to a two year deal which probably confirms Leuluai moving to hooker. Then the club released Vulcans halfback Harry Siejka which was at Harry's request. Then Nathan Friend who wasn't to be re-signed went to Matty Elliott and begged for another year and may now have a chance for a contract. And then Sam Tomkins is considering staying with the other Warriors (Wigan).
So that's a happy/meh/not happy/happy count for me.
And the Warriors are now on a 3 game winning streak and face the Sydney City Roosters, and former Warrior James Maloney, for round two.

Here is the line up to face the Roosters @ Allianz Stadium on Sunday:

The return of the GOAT

The Greatest of All Time is getting ready for his comeback.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/all-blacks/8787916/Time-off-gives-McCaw-new-lease-on-ABs-job

Time off gives McCaw new lease on ABs job

Richie McCaw expects his six-month holiday will empower him to once again appreciate the job of being All Blacks captain.
McCaw, who yesterday confirmed he will play his first match of 2013 for his Christchurch club in "three or four weeks", said the New Zealand Rugby Union's decision to grant a sabbatical gave him a fresh perspective of the privileges that come with being the leader of the world's most high-profile rugby team.
Captaining the All Blacks since 2006 meant McCaw was slowly being ground down by the continued demand to sign autographs, pose for photographs, attend official functions and fulfil media duties.
"After a while it becomes relentless. When it becomes a focus and starts getting on top of you, it becomes bigger than it should be," McCaw said yesterday.
"I think having some time away and realising that it is pretty cool to put a smile on a kid's face and doing what you do is good, you deal with it a lot better.
"And it just sort of got on top of me, really. That is why I think that time away was pretty critical."
Even if McCaw hadn't taken his sabbatical this year he was always going to lose the Crusaders captaincy to Kieran Read because coach Todd Blackadder recognised he had to lighten his load.
Since taking leave following last year's northern tour, McCaw has rarely poked his head into the limelight.
His foray into the public eye yesterday coincided with McCaw and Dan Carter announcing a commercial deal with Adidas.
McCaw also travelled to Sri Lanka as part of his "global ambassador" role with Fonterra but said that was the only work-related task he had completed during his vacation.
Offshore trips have included skiing in France, sight-seeing in Italy, Canada and Hong Kong and catching-up with friends in the United Kingdom and the United States where he hung out in New York and Las Vegas.
When he attended the IRB sevens tournament in Wellington last summer he opted to disguise himself as a policeman.
"I had a few mates that were going to the sevens and thought I would dress-up right. It was bloody good sneaking around - no-one had any idea who I was."
But his stint of "just being under the radar" will come at an end.
The 32-year-old, who watched the All Blacks play France at Eden Park and will attend Saturday night's test at AMI Stadium, is well into pre-season training and confirmed he will play for his Christchurch club in "three to four weeks".
He may also represent the Crusaders who have three regular-season matches remaining against the Highlanders, Chiefs and Hurricanes.
If they qualify for the play-offs, which begin July 19, it seems likely coach Todd Blackadder will require him to sit on the bench at least.
McCaw also acknowledged that watching the All Blacks at Eden Park stoked his desire to add to his 116 test caps.
"It did feel a bit funny. I had prepared myself for it. But when you see the lads lining-up for the anthems and then the whistle goes and you know you could have been out there, you miss it. That's the way it should be. If I didn't miss it, I would be a bit worried.
"That is when you realise how long you have got left and that you have to make the most of it."

2013 British & Irish Lions: Match 5 v Waratahs

Tahs have announced that flyhalf Foley and scrum half Lucas have been released from 7s duty to face the Lions. Top move that, and the ARU should be applauded for allowing them the chance to face the BIL probably the only time in their careers.

The Waratahs team will probably look like this then - similar to what faced the Farce, with the inclusion of Pat McCutcheon on the flank as skipper. Cutch was injured for the Force game but he'll be raring to go.

1 Jeremy Tilse
2 John Ulugia
3 Paddy Ryan
4 Ollie Atkins
5 Will Skelton
6 Lopeti Timani
7 Pat McCutcheon (capt)
8 Jed Holloway
9 Brendan Mckibbin
10 Bernard Foley
11 Peter Betham
12 Tom Carter
13 Tom Kingston
14 Cam Crawford
15 Drew Mitchell

Bench will be mostly club players, and that is probably the losing of the game to be honest. The quality coming off the BIL bench will be aware that they dropped the intensity last night so will be looking to go and go hard.

Sydney weather forecast is possible showers until Saturday when it is meant to be mostly sunny, so we should see a relatively dry track.

I'll be there screaming like a madman... If I can remember where I saved the e-tickets...

Champions Trophy: NZ vs Australia

Huge game tonight, can't wait. This is pretty much do or die for Australia, a loss here and they are relying on other results going their way as well as net run rate being in their favour.

Our record against Aus is poor, so there is a mental hurdle our guys will have to overcome. They only just achieved that against Sri Lanka after a poor run of results against them, so hopefully that will give them confidence. Our bowlers must be on a high at the moment, but there is a lot of pressure on our top 4 to score runs. One of Guptil, Williamson or Taylor has to get a big score or we will have to rely on our sloggers to come off, which is very unlikely without a solid platform.

We lost to Australia in the final of the last Champions Trophy, so this is a chance to get some revenge for that.

On the injury front, surprise surprise, Vettori is in doubt again and not likely to take the field. Micheal Clarke is out injured for Australia. So 2 key players missing from each side if Vettori doesn't make it.
I have an English mother though and a British passport through that, so wouldn't be too gutted if the Lions won

Watch the highlights too, before you judge this one. Looked like old school league out there - some brutal hits (I won't call them tackles).

Pretty strange comments really, it'll be interesting to see if he gets a hefty fine.
