A couple of weeks ago NZ indoor rowing association had a 100km erg challenge. There were allsorts of categories - teams, individual, age groups etc. While the team thing was all good, albeit a bit of hard work, I was amazed by the individuals who did it. We were at the Tauranga event and there was a 16 year old girl there doing the 100km by herself. When the results came back the winning male was a 61 year old guy who did 7 hours 22 minutes and 17 seconds. A rough calculation has him holding it at a 2:12 for the whole thing (not sure if thats correct). As far as i know the individuals got 5 minutes off the erg per hour, but im not sure if the clock got stopped.

Anyway, the winning times are here

Indiv female - 7 hours 37 minutes 35.9 seconds       Erin Monique Shelton
Indiv male - 7 hours 22 minutes 17.1 seconds          Norman Sharpe

Male team - 5 hours 33 minutes 27 seconds             Petone rowing club. The buggers beat us by 6 minutes!
Female team - 6 hours 41 minutes                            Tauranga rowing club

fark, that is massive.  but these are some mad bastards around - check out this page - my online team - one bloke has got 5 million metres this season, whci is 105 odd days old.

I have done 41k in the last two days, going to try and do 100k in a week, best I have done is 90 something.

Reckon I could clock in at 2:00 /500 forever.  Not that I'll ever test it - but might try a half matathon at some stage!!

I can pretty happily hold it at about 2:07-2:10 for 60 minutes, have done 70 minutes a couple of times & the thing that stops me isn't the tiredness, its the pain in my butt, basically at 40 minutes my arse goes numb, then somewhere after that I make the mistake of lifting slightly off the seat  blood goes into the muscle & it hurts like fark. Tried cycling shorts but the padding is in the wrong place. Apparently you can get some sort of gel pad thing, but thats gonna be weird carying that to the gym..

90mins at that rate and you've got a half marathon..

I've attempted a half marathon twice at about that rate but gave up both times after 50mins. Mentally it's hard to stay motivated for so long.

So are you going to post some times up Mogwai?

Done a couple, I only tend to do 2k & 5k once a month, the rest of the time I just crawl along over long distances (slowly) trying to burn off the beer gut

Yeah i agree. The physical side isnt oo bad over the longer distances its just so mentally taxing when all you have to look at is that damn screen. I cant wait till its warm enough to get on the water a bit more.

bubble wrap on the seat - bigger bubbles the better, and then your towel on top of that folded a few times, and it feels like a lazyboy!  so a few layers of bubble stuff and your collective arses should be fine!!

I have a TV and DVD set up so I can watch shite while I row - hvae almost got through the first 3 seasons of mash in the last few weeks.  Takes your mind off things.  Average time of a episode about 24 minutes though, which means rowing and using a remote at the same time, which burns up another minute or two of time!!

But ceratinly the mental side at all times is what gets you - sometimes even on the shorter rows, your mind just fucks you up!!

I'm 50k off the million mark for the season though, so having no trouble moptiovating at the moment!!  Got to have these little targets, and in my free spirirts team there are a few rowers around my metres covered, and I want to get ahead of them, so more reason to row!

OH, and the longest I have ever rowed is 60 minutes in one go.  Maybe after work I should do a 60 minute and see how the arse feels before thinking about a half marathon!
