Never ever thought I would break 19 minutes but then I did genuinely come very very close to chucking in doing so, and after sitting for 5 minutes to get my heart rate down from 180 left the gym very slowly...

The 42's not a PB, I've done a few 39.40's just not recently. Probably just need to easy off at the 4km mark & coast for 5km or so to break 40 again, rather than carry on flat out & be trashed.
What I've started doing gain lately (well last 2 months) is weights, used to just purely row, hadn't done weights in about 2 years so I guess that'll help as in that time I've been rowing 30 - 50 minutes (usually I just do 10km) 6 days a week, so my fitness is up & now I'm getting a bit more strength too.
More than anything I think its just the fitness.
Basically I'm a shortarse - 5 foot 6, so I'm never going to be fast over a short distance so I've always just tried to do the long stuff but I guess ultimately once you get the fitness up you can go flat out for longer over the short times. Buggered if I know really.

Rowed twice yesterday at gym, fiurst time in morning, a 30 minute piece, clocked 8,000 which was not too bad - a good 'honest' row I call it - not ball busting, but knowing you have had a decent woprkout.
Anway, then went back in eveniong when Mrs BartMan went to pump, plan to do an easy 5k befre hitting the pools and waiting for Mrs.
That's where the easy kicked in - was cruising along at under 1:50 with no effort, so dug in, and got seasons best time - still 30 seconds outside PB, but was happy. Will have to start digging in and getting some pain under the belt and getting times again.

Using a gym too you realise how important it is to get a rower that has a tight smooth running chain, getting on a shit rower can destroy your whole time. My gym has 2 great ones & 2 someone has fecked the hell out of

Same at my gym. Got my concept delivered for the weekend, and the difference between that and the ones at the gym is amazing, so smooth.
Now all my crap times are just due my poor fitness

Fuller - great for fitness - no impact on your ankles / body.
Instead of that long 40 minute run, do a row. But for your shorters stuff - you still gotta run, get your muscles used to running as well as rowing - but would have to help fitness in general..

All I do is row & bike, I played touch the other night, did a sprint & my quad totally seized up. Realised I probably haven't run in a year. Everyone went "yeah, YOU'RE fit you broken muppet". It was not good.

Its really all in the rhythm eh, its very similar to swiming, if you get the action right & smooth you can just cruise along, if you action is all over the place its pretty much impossible, most people give it up without ever getting the action right, timing knees & hands so they don't colide or worse so you have to do some weird camel hump in the stroke REALLY seems to throw people

Yes, 1.6 seconds off getting under 19 minutes for only the 3rd time ever
Got 300m out & was doing 1:46 & just needed that to hit 18:58 & then realised I was going to pass out if I didn't ease off. Never a good look.

Try a few 6km pieces, it is amazing how quick you will get to 5k on the way to the 6. and when you sit to go for a 5k time, you will have much more in the tank as you go into that last 1000m.
Probably.....

Yeah that does work a treat, you get used to doing even fairly slow 30 minutes or 10kms or 8kms & then you go back & do a 5km & kick the crap out of your PB
Top work getting under 20 mins, even better on the new C2's because they have the memory on them & in a gym you can look & mentally section yourself off from everyone else, sod all people do sub 20min 5k's.

there is an online challenge going on at the moment whcih my 'free spirits' team is paret of for 5k rowing. That is my latest effort. Takes 5 rowers to float a boat, three heavy weights, a lightweight man, and a woman.
My time slots me into the second boat. The best time from FS, and second best time over all is 16:24. best time in challenge is 16:16.
These guys are nuts!!

somehow got roped into a surf boat team.. thought it was just for pissing around but the rest of my mates want to do it proper like and apparently we went alright for punters that have never rowed before..
but back to my original question - my mate who's into it (off to to worlds in biarritz, rows for piha) was saying that he rows with the setting on 5.. i thought he'd be yanking it on the highest setting (he's bout 6'5 115kg)
anyway i've been told i need to do a sub 17:30 pronto.. am worried that your best ain't under that time and you do it all the time!
as well as the fact i have no time to get into this rowing lark, as i said i thought we were just going for a blat.. not actually super keen, check out the pic attached from a race at piha this year!

When going for those sorts of times I row on a setting of 4 - read somewhere that is the 'on the water' setting. But when I first was rowing was always on 10, and was only a few seconds outside those sorts of times even then - as in 20 seconds, so maybe quite a few!!
Something to practise on longer rows is keep your rate down - 20-24 SPM, but keep the pace at your normal pace. So when you increase the SPM back to your normal (for me between 28-30), you fly!!
But being a taller bigger bloke, you will probably row comfy with a slower SPM than me anyway, being a short arse.
