Moore soars as he matches dad's mark
03.10.2008
According to at least one of his team-mates, John Moore appears to be floating on air this week.
It's no wonder - because the Steamers' hard-working lock will bring up his 50th match for Bay of Plenty tonight, when they face Hawkes Bay in the final round-robin of the Air New Zealand Cup.
When Moore runs out at McLean Park in Napier he will join his father "Robbie" Moore (67 caps) in the Bay's 50-game club. Bay statistician Brent Drabble says they will be the first father and son to reach the half century mark. And it's a milestone the staunchly proud one-union, one-club man was keen to reach.
However, true to his take-nothing-for-granted approach, the 30-year-old, who debuted in 2000, wasn't getting ahead of himself when considering the mark recently.
"I always wanted to get 50 games for the Bay ... as long as I get selected, I'll be right," he said after the loss to Canterbury two weeks ago.
There was never any danger of Moore not being picked. With his locking partner Culum Retallick and front-rowers John Pareanga, James McGougan and Joe Savage, he'd be among the first players on the Bay team sheet each week. Another is flanker and captain Tanerau Latimer, who showed his loyalty union by signing this week to extend his contract for another two years.
Latimer has nothing but admiration for Moore. "He's old school," said the New Zealand Maori representative of his teammate, eight years his senior.
"He's from back in the day when the only thing that mattered was representing the province with a lot of pride," Latimer said. "I tell you what, he's a heck of a proud person at the moment and he's pretty keen to get his old man's record ... He'd die a happy man if he did that."
Tonight's match is obviously a big one with the winning side guaranteed third spot - and a home quarter final - while the loser will have to sweat until the round finishes on Sunday afternoon.
"It's a game we must win," Latimer said. "We know we've got teams behind us on the points table."
