Quote

“Jackson, to Tipoki… he’s cutting capers! He could make for himself a glorious moment in Ranfurly Shield history! He bounces back up, the Bay of Plenty are pouring in”.
“They’ve got the ball”.
“Advantage, offside”.
“Oh they’re offside, there’s a chance with the pass over the top, there’s a dive … is there a try? Referee is going to go upstairs to the TMO Steve King”.
“This is great the Bay boys are off the bench, they’re all on their feet”.
“I don’t know Richard, I just saw Glen Jackson say to him – lip-reading – ’did you get it’, I don’t know whether he said yes or no, I think he said – looking at Jackson’s expression - I don’t think it was there but it’s going to burn up some time”.
“We’ll they’ll come back for the penalty anyway I think”.
“They’ll come back for the penalty and Auckland will lose one as well –“
“Oh yeah, that’s a try, there’s no problem at all, yeah well maybe he said I’ve got it and Glen Jackson was thinking about the conversion”.
“Well they’re going back to halfway the Bay of Plenty players, this is Anthony Tahana”
“Oh gee I think that’s a try, no problem at all”. “Well Adrian Cashmore was up straight away and he was right over the chalk. Try is given! Tahana the try scorer, the not insignificant matter of an NPC bonus point which has been lost in the excitement of the last few minutes. It’s 31-25 and Jackson with the chance to take the game away completely from Auckland”.
“This was clever play from Bay of Plenty, Jackson, he puts Tipoki on the inside so it was safety first tactics, I don’t think he ever dreamed he was going to get this far. Then they rumble it up and get the ball back, they had huge numbers, they’d already got the penalty there because Auckland were offside and he knew they’d been called offside – a Hail Mary pass from Jackson and they just had the numbers, well done”.
“Jackson sends it on its way, AND OVER!”

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Glen Jackson said:

"The conversion was probably more important for the team - Bay of Plenty have been there before losing to a conversion. The drop-kick got the one-pump (of the arm) but the conversion got the double-pump!''

Anthony Tahana said:

"I went outside Braid and luckily I put the ball down with enough force. I only knew it was a try when the crowd reacted - I didn't want to look at the replay!''

Paul Tupai said:

"This has been a dream come true for me - 100 games today and that Log o' Wood. What a day for Bay rugby but what a day for Bay of Plenty as a whole. This win is for everybody who's ever pulled on that blue and yellow jumper and for everyone who's wanted to. That whistle couldn't come any quicker. In 1996 it came too soon but this year it couldn't come any quicker. What a day!''

And the seething terraces went wild, a blue and gold wave of ecstasy. Tears of joy. Relief, sheer undiluted, blessed relief. And the party was just about to begin.

What a day. What a day, indeed!

I was there - Sunday 15th of August 2004. Greatest day of my life!

It was an awesome day - absolutely bloody awesome. We drove up from Wellington the day before and although we had accommodation booked in the Bay the night of the win - we never got back to our beds until 5am (we could have saved the motel accommodation). I had someone of little faith sitting next to me who kept repeating during the last 3 minutes "they're not gonna do it, they're not gonna do it.." and then when they did you'd have thought he knew it all along. Can't believe it was five years ago though!

Playing for Connacht on a two year contract - played Harlequins today in their first pre-season friendly and went down 15-14. A little harder to visit there and watch the games, however we did text him updates during the BOP Wgtn game and he is STOKED that the Bay won.

Nope, he shouldn't have... but then at least he made that call for the right reasons (family) than filthy lucre. Was pretty tough trying to live half the year in Tauranga and half the year in Hamilton... in fact it would have been utter torture having to spend any more than a drunken night at the Outback in Hamilton...

Sounds about right, but maybe missing out a "mate" in a couple of places. :)

I knew it was a good omen to play Wellington on the 5th anniversary. And only Colin Bourke left of the 22 named for that glorious day.

And we are just one Auckland Shield win next weekend of another trip back to Eden Park to see if we can repeat the dose.

Wasnt that a great day.

I didnt want to leave the ground. I stayed there till for about 1 and a half hours. The atmosphere......... Il never forget it... Walking back to the car in the colours.......... Everyone calling out from their cars..... the slow ride home on the motorway still everyone cheering with conversations through open car windows from car to car............... the obligitory stop at the red fox............. Memory fading................... Worlds end tavern............... Memory gone. Headache next morning . I remmebr that...... Still smiling though but couldnt talk foir 3 days. The voice got a hammering.......... Greatest day of my life... We became a real union. I still get goose bumps. The we smashed the DSW the next week and would have held it for another day but for a coniving ref.. Great season.

You must have been on the same route as us that day BOPRED ...... what a great day. Did you ever see the half-hour documentary Kelsen Butler made about it? We should try to get that onto YouTube one day so we can relive the day whenever the Bay team is playing badly.

I saw you guys down the end. My bro and I have a mate with season tickets near half way. He couldn't go and we had great seats. Im BOP MAFIA 200 and he is 206. I saw the documentary and have all the build up, game, reunion and other comments then your doco on the same VHS. The same with the waikato game. (as much as possible.) I ran off a copy of the waikato game for dad. Hes a good old dairy Y cat O supporter from years back. He didnt see the funny side. I liked the magnets the boys were putting the hoodoo on against Wakato on Satas. God work guys.

Ahh such fine memories, I yelled, I shouted, I jumped for joy, I hugged other men...

Remember driving back home with Don and "Beautiful Day" pumping out on the car stero and even cheering a cop car as it went past us as it had blue and gold on it :)

Never been so happy to see a conversion go over in my life... :)

When the blue and yellow decals on the cop cars first came out they were called STEAMERS by the local Police for ages.
