New Zealand Rugby Union chairman Jock Hobbs is battling leukaemia.

The former All Black, 49, who is credited with bringing the Rugby World Cup 2011 to New Zealand, confirmed yesterday that he had cancer.

"Yes, I have been diagnosed with leukaemia but it's in a chronic form, not acute," he told The Dominion Post. "It's being monitored and I feel fine."

Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood or bone marrow and is characterised by a buildup of blood cells usually white cells. Though acute leukaemia requires immediate treatment, chronic forms are sometimes monitored and left untreated for a time to ensure the most effective therapy. The disease can take months or years to progress. Hobbs was diagnosed about four years ago.

He has attended some of the All Blacks' training sessions in past weeks and took part in one earlier this year.

A characteristically private man, he was an All Black flanker from 1983 to 1986, playing 21 tests, and became captain at 24, including on three overseas tours.

Hobbs studied law and, aged 23, was admitted to the bar. He was tipped to captain the 1987 World Cup team but was ruled out after too many concussions. He became a member of the NZRU council in 1995, was removed in 1996 and reinstated as chairman in 2002.

He is credited with persuading prime minister Helen Clark to fly to Dublin to pledge the Government's support for the 2011 World Cup bid.

In 2006 he was made a companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his work, but told The Dominion Post at the time: "In some ways I feel as though I've been singled out. I was just one of a number of people involved in the bid."

Hobbs is married to Nicky, sister of Wallabies coach Robbie Deans.

They have four children and live in Wellington.

I haven't kicked a ball in about six weeks. At the time I didn't think it would be important, but it turned out that way. "My mates are probably thinking 'there's the bloke who was kicking back with a few beers and going whitebaiting with us out in the middle of Eden Park'.
"My preparation hasn't been ideal. When you go whitebaiting you usually take a couple of beers with you. So my fitness was probably not what it could have been. Fortunately I only had to hold out for 50 minutes."

Rate this guy highly. He is a big chunk of our Rugby history IMHO. Great Provincial player, All Black Captain and saved test Rugby in 95 and got us the world cup 2011 in 2005(he must have been sick at that time too!) Hope he pulls through. He has certainly got a big ticker for the challenge. He is a real rugby man too. Well educated but has always retained the common touch. He was also a good age group coach(Universities) because he taught the boys lots of little tricks on and off the field. I remember as an undarage student after a coaching session with him going to the FITZ(RIP)in PNth and seeing Jock play hard with all the young fullas. He has this real nasty little jab too and unnerving accuracy in delivering it to the same fleshy spot in the course of a session. About 6-7 of us were drinking with him and the next day at lectures we were all rolling up our jerseys and showing the purple bruises that Mr Hobbs had accumulated on us all. All of us had a bruise about the size of a large grapefruit 3 ribs down from our left clavicle. Our tighthead was still too sore to play on the Saturday!
"Ok boys: fingers, backs of knees, thumbs, joints." Filth before any match.

Says a lot that he has kept this under wraps for the last 4 years despite some of the criticism he's copped being Chairman of the NZRU etc.
