Also some reports on the first lot of games...

Date played Saturday 20th February 2010
Venue Papatoetoe Rugby Club
Opposition Auckland Maori Seniors
Halftime score 20 to nil to Northland
Fulltime score 32 to 22 to Northland
Northland point scorers Maihi Brown, Toby Phillips, Gary Whippy, Matt Wright, Hunia Kingi, JJ Jones
Northland PODs Gary Whippy (prop), Ross Wright (prop), Cass Walding (first five), Maihi Brown (centre), Matt Wright (wing)

Match Report-
Northland has not beaten Auckland for a number of years and started the game dominating the Auckland scrum with a tight head to rock Auckland from the beginning.

New centre Maihi Brown scored within 2 minutes after Northland put together some good phases from the tight head.

Second five Toby Phillips from Otamatea scored after 14 minutes followed by tries to Dargaville prop and captain Gary Whippy after 35 minutes and a try on the halftime whistle to Kamo flanker JJ Jones to lead 20 points to nil at the break.
Wellsford winger Matt Wright scored 15 minutes into the second half which was converted by Hikurangi first five Cass Walding to give Northland a 27 points to nil lead.

Auckland replied with a penalty to ex Hikurangi first five Noel Edmonds and three tries two of which were converted by Edmonds to post 22 points in the second half.

Kamo winger Hunia Kingi scored a final try for Northland to make the final score 32 points to 22.

Players of the day for Northland included props Gary Whippy and Ross Wright who dominated the Auckland scrum and were really effective in contact, Cass Walding who directed play well from first five, Maihi Brown at centre who defended well and replacement wing Matt Wright who was dangerous every time he got the ball.

Auckland just lost to North Harbour last week so the Northland vs North Harbour game this Saturday at Kumeu will decide who will play in the Northern Regions finals on Saturday 6th March in Whangarei.

Northland Maori rugby has been building through a very successful colts team over a number of years and the senior team now consists of quality players who have come through the colts grade.

With mana now restored to the team and a well organized management team led by head coach Laurie Davies and assistant coach Snow Tane from Dargaville the boys are really looking forward to beating North Harbour this week.

Colts

Date played Saturday 20th February 2010
Venue Papatoetoe Rugby Club
Opposition Auckland Maori Colts
Halftime score 17 to 5 to Northland
Fulltime score 43 to 30 to Northland
Northland point scorers Saxon Samuels 2 tries, Whiria Meltzer, Pera Wihongi, Jordyn Wikitera, Kadin Te Nana, Tyson Owen 1 try each, Jordan Karena 4 conversions Tyler Landsdowne 1 conversion
Northland PODs Saxon Samuels (fullback), Whiria Meltzer (2nd five), Kadin TeNana (halfback), Jordyn Wikitera (No8)

Northland started their defence of the Northern Regions Maori competition which they have dominated over the last 6 years with a scintillating try to second five Whiria Meltzer who ghosted through a gap and beat the fullback clean after only 2 minutes.

The Northland backs were clearly superior with further tries on left winger Pera Wihongi and fullback Saxon Samuels one converted by first five Jordan Karena to a try by Auckland to lead 17 points to 5 at the break.

Saxon Samuels, No10 Jordyn Wikitera, halfback Kadin TeNana and flanker Tyson Owen scored 1 try each in the second half 3 converted by Jordan Karena and one converted by replacement first fiveTyler Landsdowne to 4 tries, 1 penalty and one conversion by Auckland for a final score of 43 points to 30 to Northland.

Auckland had soundly beaten North Harbour last week and were fired up for this match but the class and team spirit of the Northland boys were too much for Auckland.

Northland did tire a bit to let Auckland in for 25 points in the second half something coaches Brad Te Haara and Peter Nock will no doubt focus on at training this week.

Players of the day for Northland included fullback Saxon Samuels from the Mid Western Club who just returned from a 3 week course at IRANZ (International Rugby Academy in Palmerston North), second five Whiria Meltzer from Awanui, halfback Kadin Tenana from Kawakawa and No8 Jordyn Wikitera from Ahipara.

Northland play North Harbour next Saturday and will be favorites to make the Northern Regions finals in Whangarei on Saturday 6th March if they can beat North Harbour at Kumeu next week.

Definitely sound like 3 exciting players. Obviously Hauraki will get his chance in the Air NZ Cup this year, it will be interesting to see how long it will take before the other two get their chance.

Just read the write ups, it sounds like Northland did bloody well. Iwi Hauraki really impressing and the Colts resting a number of key players and still running away with the game. Good to hear Iwi Hauraki continues to impress. Interesting that it sounds like one of North Harbour seniors best players was Kahena Woodman's son who was playing centre scoring a couple of tries.

Northern Maori Results

Quote

The Northern Regions (Te Hiku O Te Ika) Maori Colts team beat the South Island (Te Waipounamu) Colts team 43-3 in Christchurch on Saturday to win the regional competition final.
They beat Central Regions (Te Tini A Maui) last Saturday.
Awanui centre Whiria Meltzer, Taipa's second five-eighth Karaitiana Vette Welsh, Kawakawa halfback Kadin Te Nana and Mangakahia winger Saxon Samuels all played leading roles in the win.
Vette Welsh captained the team, which included players from North Harbour, Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waikato and Bay of Plenty.
The win was a pleasing result for the side's Northland coaches Hector Davies, Brad Te Haara and Peter Nock, as the team had been runners-up to the South Island in 2008 and 2009.
The Northern Regions coaches had a huge challenge ahead of them before the match. They realised on Friday morning that their two starting locks, both from Auckland, were unavailable after injuries sustained at club training on Thursday night. They were forced to adapt loose forwards into locks and lacking height, use a number of short lineout options to counter the much taller opposition.
No8 Sam Henwood from Auckland, the younger brother of former Northland provincial player Tim Henwood, stepped up to the mark to jump at No2 and had a great game winning four lineouts against the throw and winning all but one that was thrown to him.
The South Island started strongly commanding most of the field position in the first 20 minutes and were ahead 3-0 after scoring from a penalty in the fourth minute.
The Northern team defended strongly and scored two tries to Waikato tight head prop Chubb Hale in the 20th and 25th minute with one converted by Waikato fullback Todd Doolan.
North Harbour winger Kaz Adams scored in the 34th minute, with Doolan again converting to give Northern a 19-3 lead at the break.
Northland centre Whiria Meltzer then ghosted through a gap in the midfield at the halfway line and stepped the South Island fullback to score a sensational try 12 minutes into the second half to put Northern into a dominant position.
Waikato loose head prop Tahi Ruru scored a try after 20 minutes followed by tries to replacement first-five Shae Luke Ellis in the 34th minute and another to Kaz Adams in the 37th minute with Luke Ellis converting his own try to end the game 43-3.
Vette Welsh was dominant in the midfield calling the shots for a pacy backline but the real battle was won up front by a courageous forward pack who refused to give and dominated the breakdown area.
The win gave the team the Manny McDonald Trophy, which will begin its year-long stint in the North Island in Northland.

The Northern senior team lost 28-17 in a match that got away from them after a slow start, giving the Southern region's team the Prince of Wales Trophy. It was a similar story in the women's competition with the Southern team's comfortable win helping the South to win the George Nepia Trophy for overall points during the tournament.
Northland's Henry Mackie, the overall organiser of this year's competition, said the Colts win, in particular, was a boost for Maori rugby in the regions.
"We were very pleased with the standard of rugby played in this year's contest. It is important that players have to really compete for positions ... and that leads us to recruit more players for the academies and that helps us promote rugby and Maori rugby at the grassroots level," he said.

Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true.
