The season kicks of this weekend with all games at 3.00pm

Taradale vs MAC @ Tareha Reserve
Priates vs Central @ Tremain Field
HAstings RSC vs Clive @ Elwood Park
Tamatea vs Napier Old Boys-Marist @ Bill Mathewson Park
Napier Tech Old Boys vs Havelock Nth @ Whitmore Park

I have not heard much (well nothing really apart from Zac Guilford now being at Tech) about who is turning out for whom. Can someone who is closer to the action post something to lets us know thanks?

Still no draw out for the Colts U20 comp. Apparently there was a meeting held Mon night. I hear 10 teams have entered, but 3 teams dont have the numbers. It would be great to see a 10 team U20 comp this year. Its imperative that clubs have a colts team. Look at the prem sides that made semis in the last 4 or 5 years, all had colts, and they are benefitting from those players coming through.

Ive seen a few pre-season games and I must give a few kudos to MAC, who have looked a lot better. Hopefully they wont have any embarrassing 100pt scorelines this season. Everard Reid from Pirates is at MAC and they look to have recruited a few other good players.

Good to hear about MAC. As a boy going to watch Club Rugby every Saturday in the 70s with my father I always enjoyed watching MAC who were really good in those days (and then Tamatea came good for a period as well). Hopefully they can get back to those standards once again. Did MAC not have a strong B Team or Colts team last season that went really well and they held back players that could have played Premier as they were not ready? Hopefuiuly they will be ready top step up a level this season. I loved it when the Maori Clubs (or now Polynesian Clubs - quite a few Samoan boys up in the Bay now) were strong as they always played exciting to watch rugby as well have having enough "enforcers" to assist the refereee sort our forward illegalities as was the custom those days. Ahhhhhhhh the good old days (even Tech won the Nash Cup a couple of times!). Will have to try and get up home a couple of times to check them out?

Surely there must be someone that can give us a bit of a rundown on what is happening on the Club scene up there there this season?

The results from opening day were
Napier Tech Old Boys 35 Havelock Nth 22
Taradale 22 MAC 8
Priates 24 Central 6
Hastings RSC 50 Clive 12
Tamatea 20 Napier Old Boys-Marist 22

Was there anyone out there that could give their opinion of what they saw at any of the games they watched yesterday?
There must have been some smiling faces at Whitmore Park after last seasons convincing Minor Premiers got taken down big time. That victory was toasted in Wellington but it is not quite the same as being there and sinking a few with the likes of Roxie, Chummie, Stu, Stu and Stu, Gatesy, Buncey, Regan, Schmitty, John Boy, Douggie, Cyril, Putta and the rest of the gang.

I watched the Tech v Havelock Nth game yesterday. Tech outscored Havelock 5 tries to 2 and have now taken out Havelock 3 years in a row in the Nash Cup round. The big Tech pack out muscled and outplayed the new look Havelock pack. They were quicker to the breakdown and their attack was too good for the villagers. Jamie Muir was the outstanding forward I thought( Tom Coventry, who was at the game, take note! ) Hastings must be rueing the loss of him. Price and Boswell-Wakefield were handy around the park. Ryan McLeod set up Hugh Reed for a good try.
Adam Brady was the best of the Havelock pack who seemed to lose their way when he came off injured. Havelock backs were missing key players, Gillies Kaka, Cyrus Baker (away at NZ U20 trials) Kev Manuel and Johnny Robin. Useful prem debut by Ihaia West, up against another younster Tipene Cottrell. Both played well.Havelock fullback Jndre Liebenberg from the colts played out of his skin, while Davis Norman was solid in midfield for Havelock.

Thanks Skaapa. Its nice to know the Texans forwards are going ok, a good forward pack is always a good start and can often carry a team if required. I am looking forward to coming up on May 22 where hopefully the Tech forwards will do a demolition job on their opponents for me that day. Look forward to hearing a few more of your impressions of the games you watch in the next month or so.

Geez, what's happening here - the three traditional Maori clubs are bringing up the foot of the table. All those big spending city clubs stealing all the players. ;)
"it is not for me a question of whether Nepia was the best fullback in history. It is a question of which of the others is fit to loose the laces of his Cotton Oxford boots."

Great to hear that Giles Kaka is going well - hopefully a call up to the big boys team this year.

I didn't know that Nui Bartlett was coaching now - is he fully recovered from his horrific injury a few years back?

Are you a confirmed starter at Whitmore Park May 22nd for Tech v NOBM? I hope to be home for that particular weekend for obvious reasons.

Do you have the kick off times Higgins?

I'm going to be home on Saturday so might head along to Mayfair Park (I assume Bill Mathewson is the old Mayfair Park) and watch Tamatea play the money spenders.

Edit: I second what Stockcar says, thanks for the updates ehoa.

Bill Mathewsen Park is the old Mayfair Park. It is really neat to see it renamed after such a deserving guy as Bill as he sure did a lot of work for rugby and in the community. The Premiers kick off at 3.00pm and the B Teams play the curtain raiser @ 1.15. Tamatea's Senior 3s are away to Taradale out in Taradale at 2.45 so you won't be able to see all three teams play.

I had to leave with a couple of minutes to go, but NTOB were up over Taradale 26-19.

Was really impressed with Trent Boswell-Wakefield (playing 7!!) and Hugh Reed at 8 for Tech.

He has more bulk now so hoping Trent makes it into the Magpies at 8, as he is a great lineout option too with his height and jumping ability.

Chris Eaton played his usual game at halfback for Taradale - turning the ball over any time he went into contact. Hopefully Kahn is not needed too much for AB duties during NPC

Thanks for the news. I haven't got a confirmed final score yet so will have to make a couple of phone calls to confirm that and other results. If it stayed the same or increased you must be more than worried about May 22!

One thing that did impress me was the crowd at Whitmore Park - both sideslines were full for the prems game - the car park was full, and 300 meters each side down Douglas McLean Ave there was no parking either.

Stockcar: Sorry to hear about your Grandfather.
Higgins: I didn't get to the game game - got roped into doing the hangi for my cousins 21st I was attending. Bummer about another loss. My other team Hastings RS is doing crap as well (I used to play for Celtic as a young fulla and went to Hastings Boys so have links to both of the teams that combined).

Thats disappointing the hear Nepia, not getting to the game that is, the 21st obviously good news where I bet a good time was had by all. Hope it was the proper hangi where everything is done together and you get the beautiful smoke flavour into the pumpkin, kumara and spuds rather than those single serve ones where every meal is done in its own tin foil plate and you don't get the lovely flavour.

As an aside I always seem to manage to combine visits home with either a rugby match or a Speedway meeting or some other sporting event of interest and that is not co-incidental by any stretch of the imagination!

Easy to pick this week - Havelock Nth, Marist, Tech, Pirates and Taradale.

The Texans will have the Nash wrapped up after this weekend and Tamatea will still be at the bottom of the table.

Grrr! Of course it's a proper hangi! I wouldn't accept anything less! Single serve???? Bah humbug! We always do real hangi.

I manage to schedule work for my visits home so they pay for the petrol. I will be working in the Bay lots during the NPC.
