Having given them a C-minus for their efforts against the Bulls, Chiefs rugby coach Ian Foster is putting the heat on the Mike Delany-Stephen Donald five-eighths combination to revive their misfiring attack.
Last year's beaten finalists, currently seventh, are in danger of slipping from playoffs contention if they lose to the fourth-placed Stormers in Hamilton on Friday, the visitors coming off an impressive victory against the Blues.
Foster said both he and the All Blacks coaches were keen for last year's European tourists, Delany and Donald to eventually link up in the Super 14, but they'd returned mixed results to date.
"I gave it a pass mark against the Highlanders and gave it probably a C-minus against the Bulls in terms of the organisation of it," said Foster today.
"We're clearly putting a bit of pressure on the roles in this game, we need it to go better.
"We've got two good people there and they're working hard on getting that combination working. There's going to be some reward for us if they can, but there's a few teething problems."
The Chiefs suffered their fourth defeat of the season in a 19-33 loss to the table-topping Bulls in Hamilton.
With All Blacks kingpins Mils Muliaina and Sitiveni Sivivatu still on the injured list, Foster retained the same backline and made just one change to the pack, with 21-year-old prop Toby Smith earning a first Super 14 start in place of Sona Taumalolo (shoulder).
Smith, highly rated in the Chiefs set-up, was summoned to the starting lineup after three matches from the bench, with the experienced Nathan White returning to the reserves.
Foster was happy with his forwards' effort against the powerful Bulls side, but execution on attack was their must-improve this week.
"We've been operating on less possession and any mistakes we do make tend to make the problem a little bit bigger. Line break-wise we're fine, we've got our normal number and generally we're pretty high in that area.
"It shows we are doing a lot of good things but we've been probably over-anxious to finish things off ahead of time."
Foster pinpointed the second-receiver role from phase play as a key area for attention, with damaging ball runners Sione Lauaki and Liam Messam having become isolated at times last week.
Centre Richard Kahui, bidding to regain his All Blacks spot after an injury-ravaged 2009, admitted he was one of the backs who needed improvement.

<SCRIPT language=javascript><!--$(function () {PushHserverAd('STORYBODY', 2, 300, 250, '300x250');});//--></SCRIPT>
"There's a few individuals who probably aren't playing their best, me included. With that you tend to put a bit of pressure on yourself," Kahui said.
"We're getting some really good ball, we just need to relax and be patient. That's letting us down at the moment, we're trying to push those 50-50 passes which is forcing those handling errors."
The Stormers showed New Zealand soil held no fears for them last week as they moved to within one competition point of the second-placed Crusaders.
Foster observed they'd lifted their game a notch since making the long trip from South Africa, suggesting an entertaining spectacle this week.
"Against the Blues they went up a cog in terms of their attacking structure and options. They played a little bit wider and the likes of (Jaque) Fourie, (Bryan) Habana and (Gio) Aplon, they like to use their footwork and sniff opportunities a bit wider.
"It's going to be a bit more across the park in terms of the threats this week."

Looks like it is being looked at a passage deal. If Donald and Delany dont gel then I expect Donald will be put back at 10. Dropping Donald seems like an impossible option for Foster. Delany woukd be pulling his hair out in that case, but only has himslef to blame for not moving to the Blues and trusting Foster with his future.

What mark has Foster given himself?

Well seen as he seems to be in the mood to be harsh. I would give him a D... would have been an E, but he has bad luck with injuries.

seriously is Fosters job untenable after this year if the chiefs don't make the semi's? surely it must be. Don't know how long he has on his contract but i can't see how he can justify another season of failure.

I think you mean untenable?

I actually think Foster is pretty much Bullet proof.

I think we need fresh ideas and fresh thinking.

agree new blood needed. I can't see a different story next year either for the chiefs with foster in charge

Damn straight it's time he got fired. However history has shown it's his job untill he doesn't want it any more. Surely taking a GF team and turning them into struggling also-rans fails a whole shitload of his KPI's?

But as BSG said, i think the injury situation may be the saving of him, it is a nice, convenient excuse. "Honestly boss, if it wasn't for those injuries, our lineout strategy would have been different, and we wouldn't have played frantic, structureless, stupid rugby all year. Honest."

I reckon they need a coach who compliments the type of players we have. We know we have great backs, speed, try scorers etc, the game plan should be exploiting that, not trying to get them to do stuff that looks good in a book but doesnt work on the field. I have heard many people who know Foster say he has a really great technical knowledge, but I just dont think he fits with the current crop of players the Chiefs have. And if injuries are such an issue, its about time they reevaluated their strength/conditioning/fitness program.

Given a fair portion of the Chiefs players are instinct players, I think that is pretty valid point.

I agree with BSG - yr stuck with him.

Longest serving coach in the S14. JAB coach. Talked of as AB coaching prospect :0

IMO he should never have had the opportunity to have one good year. He's been mediocre from Day 1. Unless you want to finish 7th that is.

Be weary guys, if Ferret is removed another favourite Waikato person will be looking for a coaching position next season.........John Mitchell.....................

nah his current contract runs until end of next year with the Force, and has been indicated he will see it out...so would be an early exit if he was to head back.

he should do the decent thing and step down imo. how he can seriously be in charge for so many yrs and achieve so little and think he still has more to offer is beyond me. If he was winning titles etc you could excuse it but with the team sheet he's got (albeit when fit - but injuries are part and parcel of the game) he needs to step aside and let someone else take them forward.

Is he fucking kidding? The Delany/Donald combo has been one of few things that've actually seemed to work well for the Chiefs over the last couple of weeks. If anything, the heat should be put on the Chiefs' brainless leadership (which was a problem with Messam's captaining in the ANZC last year too), piss weak scrum and completely out-of-form centre.

Foster needs to piss off already.

Yes, regarding Messam, he is noticeably quite poor this year. Trying too hard maybe. It is far too obvious that he causes more problems than he solves at times, and he should not, no way, be skipper. Two poor choices in that area this year for Foster.

And no way should Foster stay on. Clearly his best effort was last year, and it may be bad luck that it coincided with the Bulls being so bloody good last year, and the usual Chiefs luck with injuries to key players, but that's sport. It could also be that his game"plans" demand too much of the special talent?
