due to health reasons.

I am disappointed, I think he was a capable guy.

BREAKING NEWS: New Zealand Rugby Union and Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd chairman Jock Hobbs has stood down from both roles effective immediately due to health issues.
NZRU chief executive Steve Tew announced today that Hobbs has been diagnosed with a form of leukaemia which now requires treatment.
"Jock and his family have asked that we respect their privacy at this difficult time," Tew said.
The NZRU Board has met and elected Mike Eagle as acting chairman. The situation regarding Hobbs' future involvement will be discussed at more length at the next meeting of the NZRU board scheduled for May 27.
In accepting the role of acting chairman Eagle paid tribute to the tireless commitment and extensive contribution that Jock had made to New Zealand rugby since being elected chairman in 2002.
RNZ 2011 chief executive Martin Snedden said Hobbs had played a key role both in winning the rights to host the tournament in 2005 and in helping RNZ 2011 prepare for the event.
"Our thoughts go out to Jock and his family at this difficult time. His passion and energy has contributed tremendously to our efforts to stage a successful tournament," Snedden said.
He said Brian Roche, the deputy chairman of RNZ 2011, would act as chairman until the next full meeting of the RNZ 2011 board scheduled for May 24.

Capable is underplaying it. He saved the ABs in 95 from the World Series circus, and then got us the 2011 world cup ten years later. Legendary.

I'd like to jump in and say I hope that no-one puts up a rant about their feelings about the way he controlled the board. It'd be nice if we could keep the politics out of this thread and just pass on condolences to a man who's come down with a terrible disease and wish he and his family all the best in combating it.

Fuckin A did he what. Plus he was an awesome player in his time and excellent AB capt. Just talking to my partner about it (Oncology nurse for 20+yrs). This could be very bad if it is acute and he can't get a transplant. Best wishes and hope he works through this.

Jock has a lot of respect outside of New Zealand too. All the best for a speedy recovery.

The guy never gets a break, does he? Wasn't he pretty well entrenched as AB captain until he was forced to retire due to injury?

Concussion forced him to step down.

Michael Jones was his replacement at 7 for the first RWC. I think Dalton was his replacement as captain but was injured replaced Fitzpatrick and Kirk as captain

I saw the match Wellington v Auckland in a early season game. Hobbs was having a brilliant game and Wellington (who he had just moved to) were winning until he was knocked out just before HT. Ak easily won the 2nd half

Leukaemia. Hopefully they can sort this out.

He was captain when he had to retire due to concussion. Saved the original cartel (Lochore, Wyllie, Hart) from having to make a tough decision as they had earmarked MJ from the Barbarians tour the year before.

Hope his treatments are successful.

Edit: Winger got in there before me.

Would have been a pretty big decision to drop the AB captain for a debutant, but there have been precedents - before and after.

ABs also lost Brewer in the lead-up to RWC87, so that famous loose trio of Whetton, Jones and Buck were actually as green as grass when they played the first RWC game against Italy.

I worked in the same building as Jock in the early-80s, and he always seemed a very pleasant guy - would always reply if you said "Gidday Jock" to him in the lift - even though he was already an AB and a lawyer.

Didn't realise you were so old Chris :).
Brewer really did have bad luck around WC's. Injured in 87, not injured in 91 but not selected due to injury, fed dodgy coffee and tea by some woman called Suzi in 95.
