Quote

The Wanganui rugby team are how the Southland Stags used to be "before they got all poofy", Whanganui Mayor Michael Laws said yesterday.
Laws, along with his two daughters Lucy and Zoe, will head south for the Stags' second Ranfurly Shield defence tomorrow night and he believes the Southland team has lost its heartland feel and become a bit soft.
"The reality is you [Southland] are a professional team. You go from training to the hairdressers, training and back to the hairdressers again.
"Our guys are real men with real jobs – farmers, meat workers, factory workers."
The Wanganui team was not even professional enough to have a nickname, he said.
And you would be hard pressed to find a Wanganui player with gel in his hair, Mr Laws said.
Despite the Stags' failings on the machismo front, he predicted it would be a tough ask for the Heartland champions to beat the Shield-holders on their home turf in "the fridge".

From a "man" who wears mascara, don't the holders ususally play the first couple of games against seecond and thrid division teams away?Or is that up the union holding the sheild?
I haven't kicked a ball in about six weeks. At the time I didn't think it would be important, but it turned out that way. "My mates are probably thinking 'there's the bloke who was kicking back with a few beers and going whitebaiting with us out in the middle of Eden Park'.
"My preparation hasn't been ideal. When you go whitebaiting you usually take a couple of beers with you. So my fitness was probably not what it could have been. Fortunately I only had to hold out for 50 minutes."

Laws isn't being a cock , he is just stirring the pot a little . I have no problem with a little stirring every now and then and from what i read on the fern neither does anyone here .

I'm not so sure Wanganui will be so pleased though. It's not like Southland need anymore incentive.

It kind of makes me think that Laws reckons this is the done thing in rugby. Maybe he only watches when SA tour and PDV talks.

When you wear mascara you shouldn't really call someone a poof for putting gel in their hair.

My unerstanding is that the holders have to play 3 non-first div games per season. Usually (obviously) this is before the NPC. ALso they are usually played t home.

During Auckland's big tenure in the 80s/90s they started playing a couple of those games away.

Given that the Shield has often been held by the big city teams some of the holders (like Canterbury etc) have followed that lead.

Southland haven't held the Shield in ages so I'm sure that protecting it by playing at home (and collecting a tidy gate for the defences) was an easy call for them.

The big one is coming - I believe the first defence of Shield against a Div 1 team is against Otago. Otago and Southland haven't played a Shield match against each other in an eternity. Should be a cracker.

Yeah what Fred said. Just to clarify further - the Holder is under absolutely no obligation to defend the Shield away from home. 99% (+/-) of Challenges are defended at home. The away defences have been (generally) recent occurrences.

There's some fantastic history there, back in the day they used basically trade it between themselves while brushing off all other challengers.

I thought for some reason that the first ones had to be on the road now, no bother I hope the stags can keep it al season.

I can't stand Laws, twat of the highest order. But, he's a rugby guy through and through. In that regard he's a typical Kiwi bloke in that he played and watched rugby all his life. He used to play club rugby for Flaxmere in the early 90s when he was an MP in HB.

Wanganui is my Heartland team but I am struggling to support their challenge when Cock Laws attaches his name to the team. The possibility of seeing him celebrate the Shield would be too much to bear.

Besides, the Stags need to keep it safe for CM to take it off them.

I think it's mandatory that the Shield holders accept challenges from the holders of the Meads and Lohore Cups. Mind you, I heard that from Willie Lose...

the 2 mayors - laws & shadbolt - should be part of the pre-match entertainment, say a rugby skills comp eg. tackle, be tackled, kick a droppie, kick a goal, take a high ball, rounded off by a quick game of force back. Would be riveting viewing and would keep 'em both quiet for the rest of the night

You are presuming that either of them can shoot straight. Laws might talk himself up as a straight shooter, but he is really just a media whore who stirs up controversy to get attention.

Not a fair fight, the glare off Shadbolt's grin would make aiming impossible.

Didn't Wellington take it on the road after ww1 ?

Which is why I said "one of the" .... To cover my bases. I think they did, and Auckland may have in the early days when it didn't mean so much.
I'm sure they didn't take it down to Canterbury though :).

Aren't Wanganui nick-named the Butcher boys?

The idea that a person's ability to play rugby is in any way compromised by what they put on their face or in their hair is absolutely ridiculous. Laws is an even worse comedian than he is a mayor, but anyone who retorts with, "Hurr, he wears mascara heh heh be a man," should probably fuck off back to the 1950s and never return.

If that's directed at me please forgive for finding it a tad hypocritical for someone who wears mascara[I heard he actually dyes his eyelashes now] chiding anyone else for wearing hair gel etc.If I could borrow that time machine could you send me back to the day of deciding test of the 1956 homes eries against the boks?Cheers in advance.
