Toby Arnold, Lance MacDonald, Brett Mather, Grant McQuoid, Jason Hona, Dan Waenga, Taniela Moa, Colin Bourke (captain), Tanerau Latimer, Luke Braid, Culum Retallick, Luke Andrews, Josh Hohneck, John Pareanga, Joe Savage
Reserves: Simon Chisholm, James McGougan, Aidan Kuka, Solomon King/Sam Cane, Chad Tuoro, Phil Burleigh, Lelia Masaga.

I'm worried about 10 although Moa should cause some problems (hopefully for Waikato). Front row needs to get scrum parity so we can launch Bourke. Hard to pick a winner in this one as both sides have areas of strength but also obvious weaknesses.

That other mob.

15 Christian Lealiifano, 14 Sosene Anesi, 13 Save Tokula, 12 Jackson Wilison, 11 Dwayne Sweeney, 10 Tren Renata, 9 Brendon Leonard; 8 Steven Setephano, 7 Jack Lam, 6 Liam Messam, 5 Toby Lynn, 4 Romana Graham, 3 Nathan White (capt), 2 Aled de Malmanche, 1 Toby Smith
Reserves: 16 Vern Kamo, 17 Hikairo Forbes, 18 Dominiko Waqaniburotu, 19 Matt Vant Leven, 20 Tawera Kerr-Barlow, 21 Henry Speight, 22 Tim Mikkelson.

Great news that Masaga has managed to take his place on the bench.

What's with Solomon King/Sam Cane? Do we have an injury to one of them too?

Strong looking team, I am very optimistic about the upcoming season

Cane has a gash across his chest from a preseason. Healing nicely. Solly is fine as far as I know. . A bit rough when our depth says the likes of one of those two cant get in the 1st 22

I'm happy about everything except for #10/goalkicking, and the ongoing question marks over James McGoughan.

Right there with you

Mind you WAENGA probably cant complain about the level of mentor/coaching he should be able to receive. He seems to be running the backline well enough though.

fuck, I like going in as the under under dog. I am quietly confident about this, whcih makes me think bad thoughts, as me being confident about a team is usually a death knell...

Given your current KP Virtual picking tea, can you just clarify which camp you're currently supporting, Judas Tonto III?!!

Media release states "plenty of positives" without giving any idea what those positives are .... also I don't recall the backline making any forays into the opposition territory in the second spell?

Quote

Media Release 1 August 2010

STEAMERS POST NARROW LOSS

AT WAIKATO STADIUM

While the record book will show that Waikato defeated the Bay of Plenty Steamers 13-10 in the opening round of the ITM Cup played on Saturday (31 July 2010) evening, there were plenty of positives that the Bay side can take from the match.

The Steamers posted the first points of the match, when debutant first five Dan Waenga kicked a penalty goal. A converted try and a penalty goal to the home side saw Waikato take a 10-3 advantage into the half time break.

In the second spell the Steamers took the game to the home side, with the backline making a number of forays into the opposition territory. A well-mauled ball in the last quarter led to All Black Tanerau Latimer being awarded the touchdown. With the Waenga conversion sailing between the uprights the Steamers were right back in the game, trailing by three points with the clock ticking down.

In spite of further Steamers attacks, Waikato held on to post a narrow three-point victory. A bonus point for finishing within seven, and the their traditional ability to knuckle down when behind on the scoreboard, is sure to serve the Bay of Plenty side well in the long ITM Cup campaign ahead.

Bay of Plenty captain Colin Bourke summed up the encounter from Steamers perspective, when he said in the after match television interview, that the encounter was a good measuring stick for the season ahead.

Result
Waikato 13 (B Leonard try; T Renata con pen, D Sweeney pen) BOP Steamers 10 (Tanerau Latimer try; Dan Waenga pen con)

Just noticed the "official Bay Union" media release even has the scorers wrong - Burleigh kicked the conversion. Shockingly poor.

It wasn't the greatest game last night, our backline had look of sameness about it, and I wish Hohneck scrummed as fiercely as he looks. Bring on Masaga ASAP, and possibly bring back Aporo for a variation on our otherwise "I'm small and I look a bit nippy, so I might run around you, but I won't quite make it" backline??

Loving our loose forward stocks in general!

Moa was a bit slow all night. Hope he gets going soon.
Riki would of been good. He always stepped up for the Bay.
