I admit Ive been a vocal critic of the NZRU for many a Maori moon but this is farken awesome. Finally the marketing/promotions crew from the have got it right. After all those years of shitty advertising campaigns they finally hit a home run. I think whoevers brainchild this is should be heartedly congratulated, given a pay rise and shouted heaps of free piss. O for Awesome!!!

How farking cool was that?
I haven't kicked a ball in about six weeks. At the time I didn't think it would be important, but it turned out that way. "My mates are probably thinking 'there's the bloke who was kicking back with a few beers and going whitebaiting with us out in the middle of Eden Park'.
"My preparation hasn't been ideal. When you go whitebaiting you usually take a couple of beers with you. So my fitness was probably not what it could have been. Fortunately I only had to hold out for 50 minutes."

that is pretty cool, especially as it is a pretty low decile school too

NZRU/Adidas have been doign a few good things in the public eye lately similar to that, certainly the marketing boys need a pat on the back!

That was good - not sure if it balances out the 7/7 with horse trading games for points though .... But I'm a cynical bastard these days.

good to see, McCaw makes a great ambassador

Could you explain that to me please Nepia (genuine question).

Great piece of promotion; warm-hearted, honest, inspirational and very genuine.

Surprised McCaw had to use a plane to fly there though ...

We are in NPC mode Luigi, so Nepia is complaining about next years structure. 14 trap comp is gone, split into 7/7. With top 7 from this year staying up.

I love the ne marketing approach, it much more real and is doing a great job of connecting the ABs back to the fans. Perfect.

Luigi, Kirwan has left out the key point from the new competition that I have a problem with. The teams in the two divisions can horse trade to arrange their own matches with teams from the other division (4 matches). These matches then count towards competition points. I think it is bonkers.

But I agree with Kirwan re: the marketing approach, it has been great, supported by the Smallblacks tv show that even my nieces really like.

Fuck really? They have to work out their own top seven games? That is bonkers. I had no idea.

No, they play their division teams as per a schedule and work out the other 4 matches against the other division teams.
Either way it's bonkers to me.

Thats what I thought you said! So basically do the bottom seven have to arrange their four matches vs the top seven? That nuts. There will be a real race on one would presume to play the bottom few premier sides. And who pays for the travel?

I remember meeting the BoP ALL BLACKS in 1976. Greg ROWLANDS was the man.

Watching the faces on those kids faces brought back all of those memories. Fantastic

and then another of me and Bunce in 2002 at Twickers...a fair bit older, but still pushed my way through the crowd for it :)

'Little fella' is honorary All Black

It's a tale of an unlikely friendship between a young man fighting his way back from a devastating injury and the country's top rugby coach.

It might sound like something from a Hollywood film.

But it's a true story, starting with a tragic sporting injury that evolved into a tale of determination, family love and a good dollop of inspiration and support from the All Blacks.

Now Darryl Sabin is on a nickname basis with All Black coach Graham Henry, texts him often and has a permanent spot on the All Blacks' reserve bench.

And while the All Blacks are inspiring the plucky Northland teenager, he is also acting as an inspiration for some of the senior players.

It began when Darryl Sabin, then 18, led his side on to the pitch at Te Hapua, 30km southeast of Cape Reinga, on Anzac Day last year.

He was tackled by an opposition player and received a blow to the head.

He was helped from the field, but his condition quickly deteriorated and he was flown in the Northland Electricity rescue helicopter from the rugby grounds to Whangarei Hospital.

He had a scan and was transferred to Auckland City Hospital, where he had emergency surgery to relieve the swelling on his brain.

His life hung in the balance.

It was while he was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit that All Black coach Henry slipped a note under his pillow.

Henry's brother-in-law was in the next room after surgery for cancer.

While he was at the hospital, Henry became aware of Darryl's serious injuries.

His note read: "As always Darryl give it your best. Onwards and upwards. Ted."

Since then a determined Darryl, during his long journey of rehabilitation, has regularly attended training sessions, watched games and joined the team in the changing rooms for after-match celebrations.

Now Henry describes him as "the All Blacks' number one fan".

Speaking from Australia as the All Blacks prepared to take on the Wallabies on Saturday night, Henry said the progress the "little fella" had made and his attitude and determination were an inspiration for the team.

"He was given very little chance of surviving, let alone the recovery he's made. We have seen the progress from month to month and that in itself is inspirational.

"He's great to have around. For him the glass is always three-quarters full ... he's never down."

Henry said team members were very natural with Darryl and they could relate to him.

"They are of a similar age and they know what he's been through. It's an easy relationship and that's because Darryl is so positive. The guys can see what he has done to get himself back."

Henry said he got texts from Darryl asking him about his team selections - "I tell him to mind his own business."

In February, Henry visited Darryl at his family home in Coopers Beach in the Far North. They watched three Super 14 games and traded ideas.

Now he is on a nickname basis with Henry.

"Yeah, 'Ted', that's what I call him."

Asked what difference Henry has made to his recovery, he is adamant.

"He means the world to me. "He's been immense. He's been there from the moment I went into critical care."

All Black Brad Thorn has told Darryl: "You're an inspiration, mate."

"I told him he was an inspiration," Darryl said. "They've all inspired me immensely."

He is working determinedly to get physically fit and spends up to four hours, five days a week in the gym and can squat 140kg and benchpress 85kg.

He watched from the sideline when the All Blacks beat the Boks at Eden Park and was in the changing room afterwards.

He watched Saturday night's Bledisloe Cup match at home but will travel to Christchurch and take up his spot on the bench for next weekend's second test.

I happened to see the doco about him on Campbell Live.

Pretty amazing what he has achieved since the injury and it seems a really tight family to have gotten him through it all.

Really cool what the All Blakcs have done for him too.

I noticed him on the sidelines for teh first SA test and wondered if it was a one-off thing but apparently not. Brilliant, every little helps

I saw the Campbell live doco and while I admire him and in particular his dads determintaion and courage the guy seemed to have a death wish, his dad took out an injunction to stop him playing and he played anyway.Awesome family though, if you're a sucker for these types of stories like me here's another,
