Be nice to see Moa score for us instead of against us in this fixture

If you're not a local, it is a terrible day here today - torrential rain and strong winds - if it stays like this for 5 more hours, there won't be much running rugby this afternoon.

Did anyone else pickup on the held up call by the ref when the bay went in under the posts? I know that he had no communication with the 3rd ref and was relying on the touch judge to relay communications in the earlier 3rd ref decision. I wonder if this came into his decision making when he called it held up without the TV consultation? From one of the camera angles it looked like the ball was grounded, but none of the commentators made mention of it.

Interested to see if anyone else sore it.

I was at the game so only saw the highlights where they showed it once and it looked held up by quite a distance. But if there is a decent reason to feel aggrieved, I'm all for it!

I thought I saw the ball then too, but I think it was just headgear because when they stood up the ball was quite far from there.

Did they mention the size of the crowd on sky?
I managed to get along to the game and was pretty impressed to see so many show up in such conditions

Crowd size was 3500. Think the ref could hear everything the touchies said... but they couldn't hear him.

The crowd was surprisingly good in the weather, I'm presuming the 'new' access road o the stadium is unsealed due to pending construction traffic for that events centre - otherwise it was very much done on the cheap!!

That was the first game Id been to after three years away and, phew, it was a rough one. Im pretty concerned about the state of our set pieces. Scrums got demolished (even with Googs on) and our lineout was scratchy at best. And what was up with Moa and his quick taps? It was all pretty disappointing really....

On a more positive note, the best moment for me was when the ground announcer called out "missitero" over the PA system when the Auckland kicker missed the penalty shot. Thats gold! Please tell me that happens all the time.....

Great to have you back in the fold Hatters!
Yeah, occasionally Vinnie comes up with some gems on the PA system... though the suddenly blurted Goth'BAY!!! needs some work.

Think it should be time to resurrect our great sledges and poems section...

Couple of those Moa taps were within kicking range weren't they?

Kelly Exelby had a very interesting column in the paper yesterday. I had to agree with his thoughts abouit the value of a Paul Tupai/Wayne Ormond type characters on Saturday! I'm glad I'm not the only one who was wondering about our kick and chase game at times too...

Kelly Exelby column:

Quote

Yo-yo season cause for angst amongst Bay faithful

WILL the real Bay of Plenty Steamers please stand up?
Three games into the most pivotal season in a decade and the Steamers are crafting a playing record rivalling a runaway rollercoaster, carrying fans to the giddy heights of enjoyment one minute (week two against the hapless Magpies) before plunging to the depths of despondency the next (weeks one and three).
Three games into a 13-week round-robin is early to be bleating and way too soon to be panicking, but about now I'd settle for something resembling semi-intelligent, winning rugby, where our scrum isn't a mocking-piece for opposing teams and visiting fullbacks don't get a free ride fielding attacking bombs inside their 22 with hardly a blue and gold jersey in sight.
For the several thousand fans who braved the rain and 80 minutes of underwhelming footie, Saturday's dolorous surrender was way worse than a stadium of vuvuzelas will ever be.
Bay legend Glen Jackson handed out the jerseys to the Steamers players pre-match on Saturday, opining this isn't an Auckland side to be feared anymore. But Jacko's words either fell on deaf ears or were lost in a mild Hertfordshire accent garnered by half-a-decade living in the UK. How else do you explain away the fact Bay didn't pile into their work like madmen?
Oh, what Bay would give for a couple of hardened campaigners of the ilk of Wayne Ormond or Paul Tupai in their midst.
Pause for a moment and you'd swear that was Tupai you could hear licking his lips at the prospect of smashing an Auckland side whose physical presence has evaporated markedly. Toops, a frequent flyer with the NZRU judiciary early in his career, would have been frothing at having a crack on a sodden Baypark pitch against the latte sippers.
Ditto Ormond, the Steamers' Ranfurly Shield-winning captain. A man of few words but a colossus in the follow-me style leadership stakes, Ormond would have tucked the ball on one arm on Saturday and grabbed a few teammates by the collar with his spare hand and hoed into it.
It's great for the PR that Bay's tries against the low-swooping Magpies were repeated ad nauseum on television last week. It'd be a heck of a lot nicer to see us already ensconsed in the top seven on the NPC points table.
Friday night's opponents Taranaki are a province built on the raw-boned deeds of players like Smiley Barrett and the Slater siblings, Gordon and Andy - unfashionable, but willing to die for the cause. The amber and blacks will be fizzing this week at the prospect of Bay's arrival in the 'Naki. It's time to silence the doubters.

Let me get this right, the Assistant Ref in the game passed out the jerseys to the Bay? Anybody else see a big problem with that?

You would hope - at the least - that he'd handed out the jersies before the other guy had to pull out. The organisation starts to sound about as Mickey Mouse a set-up as our scrum otherwise.

(Noting again for Kirwan that Jacko did at least persuade the ref to overrule his initial 'held up' call against Auckland's non-try and to check the video ref...)

Oh, if we are repeating stuff, having an assistant ref with links to the team ignoring cheating happening in front of him is pretty poor. But again, I agree the ref was worse.

I just can't believe his first big ITM game was reffing the Bay, even as a sub - surely they could have had someone else on standby?

Although it is common for subs to be from the area otherwise there is additional cost of carrying round a substitute ref.

I can't either, but I doubt that it was his choice.

In terms of performance, not all players make perfect debuts, and neither do all officials. "Ignoring" is a pretty loaded word though, especially when the comms between the refs weren't working properly due to the weather - unless it was a flag-out foul play offence?
