Has there been any reason given for the non selection of Star Timu and Gillies Kaka and the selection of Luke Rooney ahead of them? It must be injury related as it does not look like it has strengthend to lineup, still one keeps ones fingers crossed that we might all be wrong abnd the impressions we have of Luke Rooney's rugby skill levels from watching the two matches he has taken part in may be ill-founded.

Thats just about the lineup I wanted at the start of the year (except Kaka for Jackman). Now to get the season back on track.

Your boys must be due for a win. On Ranfurly Shield history Southland may struggle to lift their intensity on the road, and the Magpies surely must be due for a win now.

The law of averages says we must win a game sometime but the way our guys have been playing, especially on attack tends to indicate that it is some time away. One look at the points for (41) and against (74) tends to back this up. Perhaps Magpie Supporters have been spoilt a bit by having a side that has scored plenty of tries (and a miserly total of just 3 this season) and points in the last three years that we have become used to winning nearly every game playing decent and basically error free rugby that we have forgotten that sometimes things don't quite go your way. Despite that the Team has been playing poorly and being brutally honnest the best we can really hope for at this stage is to sneak into the Top Grade in about 6th place, our usual semi-final spot would take a mammoth form reversal and an awful lot of other results to go our way, something that realistically is not going to happen.
Still we will be out there hollering away and vocifically supporting and encouraging the Magpies whilst hoping for the best and most certainly enjoying a post match beer whatever the result.

An excellent start with Sinoti Sinoti in for a nice try in the right hand corner in the first few minutes of play to give the Magpies a five nil start. Kirkpatrick missed the conversion and followed that up by missing a reasonable penalty ten minutes later. 12 minutes gone and it is still 5-0, hopefully we will be able to keep you updated Stockcar86 and Nepia if you have been unable to locate places showing the match live in you overseas locations.

Sadly the defensive woes return after 17 minutes and Pehi Te Whare scores in well worked try right in the left hand corners Centennial Stand end of the field. To make matters worse Robbie Robinson converts. Magpies 05 Southland 07

Cheers for the score update Higgins. Stupid Foxtel are showing the game at bloody 6am tomorrow morning.

What was the controversy that BSG was talking about on the main page?

Anyway I hope the Magpies sort their tutae out this week!

Mike Coman and Hika Elliot really doing plenty of damage and earn a penalty mid way 22 and 10 yard mark straight in front, somehow Kirkpatrick manages to miss the almost unmissable. 22 minutes and still HB 12 Southland 07

Kirkpatrick doing a Carter then?

Hika really is the third hooker in NZ when you rate only on playing form! The previous games he was like a one man band.

The attack still looks a bit jittery and disjointed but a vast improvement on the slop served up in the first three weeks. And to further emphasise things the HB scrum has just made a real mess of the Southland scrum. No change in the scoreline after 28 minutes but Southland back in possession after a muck up in the next scrum, still in their own half though. Things spoilt somewhat after Clint Newlands smashes a Southland player rather late and concedes a penalty.
Mark Jackman making a good fist of the fullback position so far.

Things are looking better after Tim Boys coathangers Sinoti Sinoti and receives a yellow card. 33 minutes gone and the Magpies take advantage of the penalty and take play to 5 yards short of the Southland line in the NOBM Clubrooms corner, Southland in possession though.

HB rob a Southland scrum and take possession but some diffident attack hands the ball back to Southland after an ordinary chip/bomb from Kirkpatrick to Te Whare. He gets taken but Southland recycle possession and the almarming midfield gaps reappear. A try looks certain but Fotuali'i makes a nice last line of defence tackle Southland again recycle and Koonwaiyu grubbers through. Matt Saunders regathers the ball 10 yards short and somehow slides over in the right hand corner in the tackle of the covering HB player, a very brief but very heavy shower had dampened the grass which did not help here. Robinson again converts.
Halftime it is HB 12 Southland 14

Stupid cabbage Hawkes Bay backs!
Where is Timu, at least he attempted tackles last week despite no chances in attack.

42 mins and things not looking good for Andrew Horrell with some sort of lower arm injury, almost certain to go off. Tim Boys about to re-enter the fray. Southland to have a penalty after some sort of offence again by Clint Newland

Karl Lowe pinged for a hindmost foot violation and Robinson takes full advantage of it from about the 10 metre mark almost straight in front. HB 12 Southland 17 after 45 minutes

Grrr, Newlands is a liability, Horrell is a loss - who is the reserve midfield back?

Southland dodge a bullet after Lowe seems to be obstructed chasing a grubber through and lose a 50/50 chance of a try. Not even a penalty awarded so guess that must be my one-eyedness seeing that.

While I was typing the previous up another player was replaced and Luke Rooney has come on. On current form that pretty much cancels any chance of a HB win now I suspect. Still HB 12 Southland 17 after 57 minutes.

A short lived miracle with Rooney pulling of a stunning AFL style catch but sadly gets penalised for not releasing when nailed in the ensuing play.

And to make matters worse Robinson is successful from the 10 yard mark just to the left of the posts. 61 minutes HB 12 Southland 20

Even the lineout has turned to poop with three losses on our own throw and capped off with a not straight. Ross Kennedy andTtrent Boswell-Wakefiled off and replaced by Michael Johns and Leighton Price.

FFS, it just goes from bad to worse. I'm going to head out and punch some Australians in anger now! (well not really but I feel like hitting something.)

Kirkpatrick kicks a penalty and then we win a turnover but somehow concede a penalty which Robinson (even though he has been limping noticeably these last 5 or so minutes) converts of course less than 10 to go HB 15 Southland 23.
Put the champagne back on ice guys, we aint going to be needing it tonight!

Southland deliberately milking time with scrum messing arounds wasting precious time. They are foiled though with Zac Guildford scoring, hopefully the TMO will see it the same way as everyone else. HOpefully there will be time for play to restart again.
