Most pressing for 2012 will be hooker, locks and another fullback IMO, I think that Hika (along with Dagga and Zac) will be a long term all blacks so we better get used to not having them around much.
Has Buckman played at centre at all? with his stenght and defense I think we would be better suited to a midfield role.

Surely being up in the top division will help encourage players to shift if we can't find a suitable local player
Hopefully with just one new lock, along with Ashton and Paulino will be enough.

I like Thompson and hope he stays - he better not wind up at Of Plenty like Retallick the younger!

I liked the look of both of the Japanese halfbacks, and their hooker - With us losing Kahn and Hikaro next year, do you think we could get one of them to come and play for the Bay next year?

Maybe Eaton has seen the writing on the wall and can no longer see a place in the Bay squad for himself without Russell selecting the team?
Of course the writer of said Dominion article, Toby Robson, might have made an error.

I saw that too and just thought it was an error by Tony Robson which would not be surprising as he seems to make a lot of them. Certainly hope its not an indication of actual moves and haven't seen or heard anything officially about them leaving

Kennedy back to boost Magpies]%2$s[/h]
Experienced Super Rugby lock Ross Kennedy will return to the Hawke's Bay Magpies rugby side next season.
Hawke's Bay Rugby Football Union CEO Mike Bishop confirmed yesterday Kennedy, 29, will return to the Bay after completing the 2012 Super Rugby season with the He missed this year's ITM Cup season after opting to play for the Eastern Province Kings side in South Africa after a second consecutive Super Rugby snub. The Kings were coached by his father and former Taranaki mentor Adrian Kennedy.
Originally, Kennedy had planned to play overseas for three years but the chance to play for the Crusaders was too good to turn down. Bishop said securing Kennedy's services in the wake of former All Black lock Bryn Evans's departure overseas to play for London Irish and world champion under-20 lock Brodie Retallick's departure to Bay of Plenty was a huge coup.
"We know Ross and he knows us," Bishop said.
Kennedy's signing means the Magpies will again have three Crusaders next year (All Blacks Israel Dagg and Zac Guildford are the others) and a total of 14 Super Rugby players. A former Wellington, Otago and Counties-Manukau representative, Kennedy has previous Super Rugby experience with the Hurricanes from 2003-06 and the Highlanders in 2009.
The Bay's Crusaders trio and the Magpies Hurricanes quartet of Karl Lowe, Chris Eaton, Dan Kirkpatrick and Richard Buckman are all likely to get game time during the pre-season clash between the Canes and Crusaders in Mangatainoka on February 11. Hawke's Bay's other Super players signed this year, Andrew Horrell, Tino Nemani, Retallick, Kane Thompson, Hika Elliot, Sona Taumalolo and Ben Tameifuna, are all Chiefs.
Bishop hushed rumours which suggested South African lock Johan Snyman will return to play for the Magpies next season. He said there had been talks with Snyman but he was unlikely to return.
Bishop was expecting the Magpies' draw for next season to be finalised next month.
With new Magpies coach Craig Philpott not scheduled to officially start his contract until January, his assistant coach and former Magpies captain, Danny Lee, has been in charge.
Lee said he was happy with the progress being made by members of the summer training squad .
"They will get a programme to follow during the Christmas-New Year break and from the middle of January pre-season training will be in full swing," Lee said.
"Several of them are also in the Hawke's Bay Sevens squad which is being thrashed in the build-up to their tournaments," Lee added.

New Hawke's Bay Magpies rugby coach Craig Philpott resembled Father Christmas in his first visit to the Bay since his appointment.
Philpott, who was appointed back in October, arrived from Christchurch with a list of Magpies signings. At the top of his list was former Blues and Auckland hooker Ash Dixon, who played 21 first class games for the Magpies during the 2008 and '09 seasons.
"Ash is keen to put the pressure on Hika [former All Blacks hooker Hika Elliot] again and it will be good to have two top-quality hookers here again," Philpott said.
Former Canterbury and Nelson Bays lock Philpott coached two-time world champion Dixon, 23, as a 12-year-old in the Canterbury Primary Schools teams and in rugby and cricket teams at Christchurch Boys' High School where Philpott finished up as assistant principal last week.
"I caught up with Ash recently. He and his partner have a 3-month-old daughter and are keen to raise her here in the Bay," Philpott said.
Two promising Cantabrians will follow Philpott, 44, and his family to the Bay next month. They are fullback-first five-eighth Nick McLennan, who played in the Canterbury Colts side two years ago and in the Canterbury B team this year, and No8 Kieran Coll, a former Canterbury Colts captain, who Philpott pointed out was similar to All Black Kieran Read and Magpies captain Mike Coman on and off the field.
"Both are keen to become professional players and will add a lot to the Bay. At the same time there are no guarantees for them ... they will need to prove themselves," Philpott explained.
A former Canterbury Colts head coach, Crusaders lineout analyst and resource coach with the ITM Cup Premiership-winning Canterbury side this year, Philpott, confirmed Magpies utility back Mark Jackman is back in Christchurch preparing to play for Canterbury at the January 7 and 8 National Sevens in Queenstown.
"Mark hasn't been contracted by the Hawke's Bay union and will make a decision after the Sevens as to whether or not he will return to the Bay," Philpott said.
He also confirmed the Magpies will have a Ranfurly Shield challenge against Taranaki next year.
"Hopefully it will be the first or second challenge," Philpott said.
A keen mountainbiker, Philpott, pointed out while exact dates and times have yet to be finalised for the Magpies 2012 season there will be home games against his former union Canterbury, Wellington, Auckland Otago and Counties-Manukau. Away games will be against Southland, Manawatu, Waikato, Taranaki and Bay of Plenty.
"I can tell you when there was the conference call last week for crossover games between the Premiership and Championship teams we weren't the first choice for anybody," Philpott explained.
A former Toshiba player in Japan, Philpott, will officially start his Hawke's Bay job on January 16, He said he will spend the first six months getting a feel for the organisation.
"Basically I will sit back and watch before deciding if any changes need to be made."
Philpott was impressed with the facilities at Napier's McLean Park as well as the Magpies gym at Onekawa. However he pointed out the Bay union would benefit from having all their facilities on the one site.
Back in 2006 the union had plans drawn up for such a base at Ellwood Park, Hastings. Little has been said about the project since.
Although Philpott was on a one-day visit to the Bay yesterday he still had time to join his assistant coach Danny Lee and Magpies players Tua Saseve, Gillies Kaka and Trent Boswell-Wakefield on a promotional visit to Durhams Auctions in Havelock North. Durhams Auctions won the Hawke's Bay Today ITM Cup tipping competition this year.
A fan of the programme Two And A Half Men, Philpott, quipped his new role could be looked upon as a One And A Half Men show such was the size difference between him and former All Black halfback Lee. It was obvious the fun times the Magpies had under previous coaches Peter Russell and Tom Coventry are set to continue.
Philpott's main goal is no different to the one Russell and Coventry had. "I want to see the Magpies win the Premiership and we've got the manpower to do it," Philpott said.
Needless to say Magpies fans won't complain if the premiership is one of Philpott's early Christmas gifts in 2012. Considering what he delivered yesterday it must be considered a definite possibility

Didn't think Dixon was a bad player, but, he's nowhere near Hika's class, do they expect Hika to be on AB duty this year?
The only bright spot in that article is that Boswell-Wakefield, Kaka, and Saseve are still contracted to the Bay.

I don't think Jackman is quite that bad - he shines at club level, but just does not have that spark to be a regular starter at NPC level. From a selfish point of view, I would be happy enough for him to stay playing club rugby for NOB
So long as the Cantab imports move to HB and play club rugby throughout the season, I don't mind that. It gives the selectors a chance to compare them against local players in the same positions and pick the best players for the Magpies. With another first five coming, we will have a good selection of players - Kirkpatrick, Horrell, West and the new guy. West may still be a couple of years away from making the top side, and assuming he makes the final cut, I am keen to see how well he does for the U20's next year.
If we are going to import someone else from Canterbury, maybe we could get John Bird's boy back to the Bay. He made the wider training squad for the Crusaders this year, so may be trapped down there for a while. On the other hand, it is becoming a habit recently to have some Magpie players to play for both HB and the Crusaders, so who knows...

Re: Dominic Bird. I read an article somewhere and he said that his intention was to complete his degree and return home. Hopefully the evil empire haven't sucked him in like they did with the Falcon.
The point is, that most of the Cantabs who have come have been 2nd rate (bar Horrell really) and hung around the fringes - I'd rather we have second rate homegrown boys doing that.
* I don't mind if they come down like Horrell did, off their own back, it's the 'deals' that piss me off, like the 5 U19 stars. I'd rather we put our money towards our young players. Give a guy like Boswell-Wakefield more cash so that if he's not selected for development squad/S15 he has more incentive to stay. Coman was better when he played this year, but didn't play much, and TBW was one of our best forwards with Lowe and Hika yet Coman gets the spot???

Hika Elliot won't be back. After the Super 15 he is looking to go overseas (HB Today January 21). Does anyone know what Sona Taumalolo is doing after the S15? His Magpies contract ended end of 2011.
if he isn't coming back then I hope Skaapa is right and Ben May has been signed - he is a loosehead like Taumalolo.

No mention of who he has signed to play for but if his departure comes about it will leave a big gap to fill in the front row and could be the primary reason for Ash Dixon comeing back to the Bay.
If his departure comes to pass it will be a shame with the All Black hookers sport sure to come vacant in the not too distant future as both Andrew Hore and Keven Mealamu are not getting younger. Perhaps his reasoning is that the two existing hookers will probably hang around for another couple of seasons before calling it quits, sufficient time for him to pocket a bit of cash playing overseas before comeing back to challenge for the hooking spot. That will be a big risk as we have all seen that players coming back from overseas sojurns are simply not the same player they were before they left. Disappearing away for a couple of years also opens the door for people to come through (there are a hundred good hookers coming out of 1st XV rugby each and every year with lofty playing ambitiona) and take over the sport vacated and the returnee might not be able to regain it when /if they return

There is a Tongan team coming over to play in the Marist 7s that run alongside the IRB 7s next weekend. You never know what Higgins might uncover amongst those players that might be a re-incarnation of Mr. Taumalolo!
