So if you love cricket and you like to listen to Alan Mac from Cornwall Park or Ron Snowden from the Basin Reserve, sign this petition now.

I kicked it off first thing this morning and about 16 hours later, we already have an amazing 332 signatures including some people you will have heard of. Go to it, Ferners.

In reality what Radio Sport appear to be doing is simply renaming what they pretty much do nowadays during the domestic part of the season anyway when they shoot off for (prolonged) advertiment breaks far too frequently. It seems you get only a couple of overs between these intrusions, and that does get rather irritating.

The only reason for me to return there (and put up with their adds and personalities) would be removed. This might not be a bad thing for me
I miss the days of the Comalco/Mobil sponsored Radio New Zealand summer grandstand (except when it would be interrupted by parliament)

Leave us fucking accountants out of this. Some of us love cricket too

Weekends are good for it but I don't care that Otago 5 for 87 when I just want to hear the sports news driving home frmo work during the week.
Anyway it's somewhat ironic given the origins of RS.

Theres nothing better than listening to the cricket then dozing off and waking back up to it.
Its summer personified!!!
Now if we can just find a way to keep the half drunk beer cool whilst we have the Nanna nap................

Endless talkback may not be more popular but it may make more financial sense. Radio Sport is a business, it must turn over a profit. Having commentators at three grounds throughout New Zealand is expensive. I bet the cost of one cricket commentary would be quite high. Even with Plunket Shield on the radio they still have to pay the talkback host. Personally, I want first class domestic cricket live on the radio but I can't blame radio sport for making a cost effective decision for their business.

What suprises me, is when reading a 'review' in the newspaper or on Stuff of a Plunket Shield match - is you can tell it's someone just looking at a scoreboard from blackcaps.co.nz and putting it into sentences. No actual comment on the quality of play/players etc.
Why don't the commentators double up with some written journalism? Or a journalist ask the comentator - and quote them - for a few lines about how well the century-maker or 5 wicket taker played?
With no radio commentators, and seemingly no print journalists attending domestic cricket ...... well, probably not much change TBH

I completely agree. If I want to know the scores, I can find out myself. I would rather have a piece reviewing a pleyer's technique and saying how well they may do at international cricket.

I think the thing that frustrates me is that this was the beginning of Radio Sport. Back in the forgotten ages when I were a lad, they used to broadcast part time on selected frequencies over the summer months. The cost must be in the presenters -- and there must be a benefit for NZ Cricket in there somewhere too. FFS, they just got >$50M from the indians, we should be able to subsidise a few punters at the cricket. Maybe (heaven forbid) an NZPA type deal with a few forms of media? Print, internet, radio... this is not impossible.
Gibbit - an option for BSport and Radio Trackside perhaps? Cheap content in summer?
I know I wouldn't be into cricket the way I am now if it weren't for these commentaries... and long car trips in summer would be substantially more painful.

No hope for space on Radio Trackside after 2pm-2.30pm. There are up to 14-15 races an hour from there on in most days, which require markets and results to be read out.

I remember listeningto M Crowe's summer of centuries, when he scored 8 or 9 in the domestic season, can't remember what it was, but there were a ton. Working in a diary, out the back doing the stock boy thing, radio sport on the AM radio.
Good days.
