The Nominees for the scrummest of halves are (in no particular order):

FOTUALI'I, Kahn SAM
Pros
  • “Would love to have him in Black”
  • Good pass
  • great organiser
  • can play 10
  • Samoa's best IMO.
Cons
  • None listed
WEEPU, Piri NZL
Pros
  • stepped up in the quarter and semi-final of the RWC
  • steered the ship
  • kicked his goals
  • ditched most of his arse
  • saw off long time challenger Cowan
  • no question of his superiority to Ellis this year
  • ankle tapped a Frog in the RWC final.
  • and turned over the ball at the very next ruck to stop the French attack.
  • excellent display against the Argies
  • World Cup Winner
Cons
  • untidy kick clearance in the final led to French try (although Dagg is perhaps more accountable for the turnover)
PHILLIPS, Mike WAL
Pros
  • big guy who kept the Welsh team moving forward.
  • lead from the front
  • directed traffic well
  • scored tries when faced with an incompetent, backfiring backline.
Cons
  • became a bumbling fool near Wales' exit, knocking on behind the ruck.
TANAKA, Fumiaki JAP
Pros
  • had a great RWC, terrific pass. One of the best number 9's who played through September and October this year.
  • Best pass
Cons
  • none listed
YOUNGS, Ben ENG
Pros
  • not only was the young man England's best player in 2011 but if the leaked report is true he was doing a lot of the side's coaching too
Cons
  • being England’s best player not necessarily a glowing recommendation
  • unsure whether coaching England should be considered a Pro
GENIA, Will AUS
Pros
  • worthy of nomination
Cons
  • he didn't really live up to expectations at the big show
  • looked decidedly average in more than one game
YANYUSKIN, Alexander RUS
Pros
  • good pass
  • steered the russian bears around the field
  • set up one of the best tries with a little dart, shimmy and away for them against Ireland.
Cons
  • is bloody tiny - 1.65m in with 5cm sprigs in
YACHVILLI. Dimitri FRA
Pros
  • Masterful performances in the last 3 weeks which almost won France a World Cup.
Cons
  • none listed
