First England, who i thought were daylight ahead of everyone else, are in a bit of a hole after 1 day v Pakistan. Rolled for 192 (thanks to 70 from Prior) mainly by Pakistan's crazy spinner who took 7-55. He's got a retarded action and he's a chucker worse than Murali i reckon. Good luck to him. In reply England's seamers do nothing and its 42-0. I can imagine the wicket already.
South Africa won the 3rd one dayer v the Lankans to take the series. Rain affected, so D/L result.
Over here all the pressure that was on Ponting, Hussey, Hughes, Haddin etc has now gone on to Shaun Marsh. With Watson due back at some point, someone has to go, and he has failed spectacularly this series. All the talent, just needs some runs, the much less talented Ed Cowan is showing him up badly. Brad Haddin is probably on his last legs as well, no runs and some poor keeping not doing much to help his cause.
India are pretty fucked. No Dhoni as has been mentioned, but that shouldn't hinder them as he's done fuck all as a keeper, batsman, or leader. This test is all about saving a bit of face, Laxman going out with one last good knock (if he retires as expected), and Sachins elusive 100 (that will never come, cricket is a cunt of a game).

Anywho... yesterday Auckland played Canterbury in t20... Mahmood scored a century... managing to bring it up with the last ball of the innings. Auckland scored well over 200
Canterbury replied and Nicol scored a century.. he bought his up as he hit the winnning runs.

and bloody injuns, losing so quick that it's about a month between tests, or so it seems.
We're playing Zombabwe, yawn. With a 32 year old keeper set to make a debut, must be SOMEONE else a decade or so younger that might fill the gap?

They will need to do a lot better in tests 2 and 3 or it will be a very short reign as world number 1 test team.

I'm not sure that opening the batting with Southee is a good idea, but using him as a floating pinch hitter for ND and NZ is worth looking at IMO. He is either going to score quick runs or get out quickly so you either win big or you don't lose out at all. All the Knights needed at times this season was somebody to give them some momentum with the bat.
His bowling has been very up and down through the HRV Cup but if you look at his stats he is still one of the highest wicket takers and at a decent economy rate...so he is obviously excellent when he is on. You would expect better consistency from one of NZ's best T20 bowlers. Trent Boult will be more of a worry for Grant Bradburn...They had a lot of faith in him which is shown by the number of overs he bowled but they got very little in return despite bowling well at times.

Anyone catch TMS yesterday? The line from Dubai went down so they spent the best part of the middle session commentating through an iPad microphone and Skype. Classic.

M4L turning up on some deviant website would be worth the risk to see Chris Gayle Bat. I'll never forgive Brian Lara for getting out for 3 before I made it to the Basin back in 06....what can I say, I like Black guys who let it swing from the left.
I also like cack handed batsmen of all races.

Canterbury seemed to lose their head a bit - not batting first, and opening with a spinner... that is so 1992 baby

Meanwhile back in NZ, we have just had Wellington anniversary weekend, with no cricket match in the lower north Island to coincide with this long weekend.
Next week is Auckland anniversary weekend, there will not be a cricket test in the upper North Island to coincide with this long weekend.
The week after is Waitangi weekend, all over the country (obviously). Would make a great time to schedule a third test.
NZC you are awesome. Imagine a nation lucky enough to have 3 long weekends in a row every year during the middle of the cricket season. Yet not enough nous to try and build a traditional fixture list around it. Part of the marketing is done for you when these events end up becoming their own occasions.

Children of the 80s, may have had a case of deja-vu when seeing the Otago lineup during the latter stages of the HRV Cup. McCullum & Rutherford opening for Otago, I was almost subconciously expecting to see Kevin Burns, Bruce Blair, Richard Hoskins names due to come in after them.

He currently has 5 for 22 and ND are 39/6.
He has played for CD for the last few years, apparently has decent pace (left armer) but TBH without much success (averaging in the 40s). Returned to Auckland and been playing club cricket and provincial A stuff this year. He is certainly well and truely taking his first opportunity this year by the scruff of the neck.

With Watling's elevation to the blackcaps, all the talk of 'keepers who can bat as well as a specials batsman must have gotten young Latham and Brad Cahopa a little excited.
There is almost a roadblock in NZ FC cricket of very good, very experienced, keeper bastmen of around the same age in Young, Hopkins, McGlashen, Van Wyk, and it must have been difficult to see a path through apart from becoming specialist batsmen (they have both been selected as batsmen, including as openers, for the provinces)

However I saw the last hour of day 2 and suddenly the ball started gripping and spinning fast. Ajmal and Rehman were almost unplayable and Morgan in particular had no idea what was coming down. It may be a struggle to get the last 50 runs to catch up to the Pakistan innings
Obviously Pakistan are erratic and anything could happen but at this stage England should be very concerned about batting last on a pitch that is biting so much on day two

71/8 chasing 145
Pakistan playing three spinners is exposing the English techniques.
Gul is the only pace bowler that has bowled in this innings and he has bowled just the three overs
Make that 72/9
