For those that missed it, he has moved from Blackburn Rovers to Tottenham Hotspur. Quite a big deal as he has gone from a club that has hovered between mid table and relegation most of the time he has been there to signing for a team currently 3rd in the English Premier League. At the moment the only teams above Spurs are Manchester United and Manchester City and they are in front of teams such as Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. If his injury problems are behind him this will be a great move for him to round off his career (he's 34) by challenging for a Champions League spot for next season...then hopefully coming home to play a season or 2 for the Wellington Phoenix.

All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen says it was "an absolute no-brainer" decision to transfer to English premier league title contenders Tottenham Hotspur to play and train "with some of the best players in the world".

The 34-year-old confirmed to The Press late last night he was transferring from battlers Blackburn Rovers to the glamour London club on a six-month deal with a one-year option.
"It's obviously extremely exciting," Nelsen said. "It's not 100 per cent yet, I've just got a visa [change] to get over the line, but it's pretty much done.
"It's just an exciting opportunity at this stage of my career. I've loved my time at Blackburn, but it's something I just couldn't turn down."
Nelsen said the carrot of playing for a club challenging for a place in the European Champions League meant the decision was "an absolute no-brainer". "There are some unbelievably good players there, it will just be exciting to start training with them."
Nelsen said Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, who tried to sign the Kiwi for Portsmouth in 2006, had "done an incredible job" to keep Spurs to third place in the league. Redknapp wanted him to provide experienced defensive cover and potentially push for a place in the team, Nelsen said.
He has had just one game for Blackburn this year because of a knee injury. But Nelsen said he "played for Blackburn behind closed doors this week" and the "knee felt really great". He said he would be able to play immediately, "but my match fitness isn't where I would like it be yet".
Nelsen spoke to The Press as he was driving to Blackburn's training ground "to pick up my boots" and say his goodbyes to the club he captained for much of his seven-year career at Elwood Park and close to 200 first-team matches.
He said he made "lifelong friends" at the club and it was a "place I will always remember, the club and the whole town". "It's been a fantastic time in my life."
Nelsen was released from his contract at Blackburn after a meeting with Rovers officials. He said he had been "looking at other options" and Blackburn, who are battling against relegation, were "looking to go in a different direction".
He had already had messages from Blackburn teammates. "Everyone's wished me all the best."

Nelsen has never discussed his salary details but it is common knowledge senior premier league players are on multi-million pound contracts.
Asked if he was getting a big pay rise at Tottenham, a much bigger club than Blackburn, Nelsen said: "It's never been about money for me...this is a great life experience; it's just an incredible opportunity."
Nelsen's United States agent Lyle Yorks told the Washington Post Redknapp "has always been a big fan of Ryan. When the opportunity came up, it really played itself out today, before the transfer deadline hit."
All Whites coach Ricki Herbert said Nelsen had "done incredibly well in a very, very tough league, arguably the best in the world".
"So to move to a club like that who's doing incredibly well and could well be playing in Champions League football as well...it will be fantastic profile for the country as well."
Nelsen will commute from his family's Cheshire home to London to play for his new club.
After Spurs' 3-1 win over Wigan earlier today Redknapp spoke of his admiration for Nelsen.
"Ryan is a great competitor, a good sort to have around the place, I've always liked him," he told English newspapers.
New Zealand football great Steve Sumner said Nelsen's transfer was "a fantastic move". "It's absolutely fantastic for a guy of 34 that a top-three team have seen some future in him".
Sumner's 1982 World Cup finals teammate Bobby Almond, a former Spurs youth team player, was also pleased to hear Nelsen was joining his old club, although he left "he would never have left" Blackburn. "But Ryan has got to look after himself and he's made a sensible decision for his career...I might put my Tottenham Hotspur shirt back on now," Almond quipped.

Can anyone tell me if he has a chance of starting should he be fit? I suspect he was picked more for team morale off the pitch.

Every chance of playing. Spurs have some glass players at the back.

Spurs have plenty of central defenders, but they are all injury prone or creaking (like Nelsen)

Michael Dawson - fringe England player currently injured
Ledley King - Former England player, but I think can't play 2 game sin a row. is very good but very immobile)
William Gallas - Former France captain
Younis Kaboul - fringe France player

A bit of a punt by Redknapp that Nelsen will stay fit, otherwise they already have plenty of ageing, crocked defendrs, as good as they may be.

But in saying that, good luck Nelsen. Hope he kicks ass. Would be awesome to see him playing Champions League next season (fingers crossed)

Gallas is out long term with injury and as IR mentioned King can only play so much. So with Dawson injured, Nelsen's immediate future in the Spurs team is looking reasonably promising.

There has been a lot of talk (by upset Blackburn fans mostly) that Nelsen's injury hasn't been as bad as made out to be and the Manager was ordered not to play him by the clubs Indian owners to avoid paying him out bonuses as part of his contract. Seem's like tin foil hat material to me, but I guess the fact that he has been out for so long and then comes back and plays some reserves games just before transfer deadline then passes the fitness test to sign for Spurs is evidence enough for some.

Not too surprised it's Harry Redknapp that has signed him, he has tried to sign Nelsen a few times before while he was at Portsmouth...

Great news for Nelsen making the move to my Spurs. As others have pointed out he has a chance to play and could make a decent fist of it. The knockers said Scott Parker wasn't fast enough but he's been a standout performer. Nelsen will take his chance when given and in the meantime will train like the seasoned pro he is.

Kind of ironic that all the talk was about Samba leaving Blackburn and it ended up being Nelsen. I might have to watch a Spurs game.

Keane and his Venky's masters will give up Samba to Spurs once they drop at the end of the season ;) I can't believe the manager hasn't been given the boot already

As a lifelong Spurs fan nothing really surprises me any more - but this is unexpected. Harry obviously likes his attitude, hope he get's am injury free run - although realistically it will probably be in the FA cup this year.

Nailed on starters are King and Kaboul. Kaboul has been immnese this year, and if Ledley is fit he plays. Dawson is back from injury and fit to play. Gallas long term injury. Nelsen in as Bassong was loaned off to Wolves.

Ledley King is a sporting hero of mine. He's knees are so bad that pretty much the only training he can do mid week is swimming, yet he still produces the goods at the weekend. He seems to be OK playing once a week at the moment, but lack of training means he's susceptible to hamstring/groin problems. I just hope he knows how this might affect him after retirement.

Bloody hell, Kaboul is now injured and if King isn't fit, then Nelsen may well partner Dawson at the back.

No go for Nelsen. I'm sure he won't mind. Gets to keep on training his way back to 100% and will be ready when called upon
