Anybody played this?
As a new years resolution I've decided to try organised sport again and the Auckland GAA season kicks off in October, so I reckon with a long lead in I could get into a fit state by then. The trouble is I haven't a clue how to play the game. I haven't even seen it played. Or is this falling into the province of cock-eyed ideas?
Gaelic Football?

Never played the game but I have got into watching a bit of it. It's a very good sport. Certainly far superior to Aussie Rules, IMO.
Do you know anything about the rules of the game already?

my friends sister plays in the Auckland league, not sure that she really knew much about the game prior to starting to play it. I wouldn't stress too much.
I guess you could find games on the net, but it would be a bit of a mission.

Give it a go. It's not that hard to pick up.
If you're looking for clips of the sport there should be millions of them up on YouTube or try www.gaa.ie which is the website of the Gaelic Athletic Association, the organisation that runs the sport in Ireland and worldwide.
The full version is played 15-a-side and a full-size pitch is considerably bigger than a rugby pitch at 140m long by 90m wide. Unless you're the goal-keeper I'd work on aerobic fitness as there's a fair amount of running involved.
The national obsession, however, is rugby, and excitement reaches fever-pitch whenever the famous Leinster team plays, with fans driven to such delirious excesses as actually going to the games and occasionally cheering.

There is one glaring problem with Gaelic football and that is with what constitutes a 'tackle', it can be very messy in some games. Ideally like rugby the tackled players should be forced to release the ball but there is no onus on the player in possession to do so, and what results is often pretty messy. But when the games flow freely it is a very fast game. Hurling though is far superior.

Hurling is great to watch but you'd have to be a little bit mad to play it. Your average hurler seems to have less teeth left than ice hockey players. The good players are totally fearless and completely bonkers!
Agree with Hydro11. Gaelic football is MUCH better game than AFL.
