I hope Leiua gets to start. I was surprised he did not get a s14 contract.

He looked a player of great potential last year in the NPC. He reminds me of Conrad in the way he plays. Pinpoint defender, straightens well and good option taker but fast enough to play wing or centre.

The only question is can he step up from NPC to s14. I think he will if he gets a chance.

With Eaton injured I would move Paterson to 4, play Lowe at 6 with Waldrom at 7 (as happened a few times last year), and Broadhurst to the bench.

Gear looked really good in game one too; I didn't really notice him get injured. How long is he out for??

Another option is to put Vito in at 6, which would revive the other trio that played last year. Any of the three options would be fine, depends on the game plan and player management.

Cruden, Leiua and Taylor all get their first super 14 start. All promising young players.

When did Brett Mather join the Hurricanes? Where's Jonny Leota?

Leota injured himself recently I think

Mather joined the Canes this week after injuries to Smith and Ellison

I thought they should have called up Ngatai but guess as he is not part of the wider training group couldn't.

That's bad luck for Leota. Yeah that Ngatai is definitely a player to keep an eye on, but I don't see how him not being part of the wider training group had anything to do with it, otherwise they wouldn't have brought in Mather. Mather is probably there because he hs experience with the Highlanders and Ngatai is still a bit green.

So players in wider training squads can get a callup from another franchise?

Actually thought Mather played alright in the NPC.

Big test for Nonu. He has a real opportunity to show his backline leadership in this one with 2 green players either side.

If he just keeps shovelling wide from standing deep, then I think the Cheetahs will win.

Any player registered in NZ can get called up as far as I know. Lachie Munro played for the Blues last week...he isn't in the wider training group.

If a player is getting called up from another franchise, you would expect they would need the home franchises permission first, in this case the Highlanders.

Seeing as Ngatai was limited in playing time by the NZRU in last years ANZC, I can't see him being allowed to play Super rugby til next year.

I'm not on top of the contractual arrangemetns/money involved (where's medrew??) but are wider training group players just paid a match fee or are they on some small retainer of sorts to keep them training, development games etc.

I recall last season hearing Lam say that they cannot go outside the squad of 25? until they have 2 injuries in the same position (or something...)

given some of the WTG members are not even NPC players, who would probably just have a top up, they must get a match fee or soemthing? surely? Or maybe it is for the love!

I don't doubt that they will get a match fee, but is that all? Do the players get a match fee in these Development games or is that just part of their WTG "salary"?

Seems interesting to me somewhat that Mather is a WTG player for the Landers and yet he gets a gig for the Canes if he has a paid arrangement with the Landers. I don't mind it from a players perspective because its potential gametime with the big boys, just trying to understand how it all works.

what is Charlie Ngatai up to? Would he be ready for super rugby, and if so is he another Cane that will be drafted?

There seems to be two Canes threads - although this one seems to have more in it. [Threads have been merged now]

Good to see Cruden get a start, Lowe to get another start and Perenise a bench spot. Glad they're picking a prop who can prop and not a prop who is a short lock. Pity they're still picking the hooker who can't really hook, throw the ball in etc, but is awesome in broken play - but then they don't have much choice do they.

Odd that Mather got the call up. I quite like him as a player though. Of course, I would have preferred a Canes region player but aside from Treeby, Ngatai and Horrell there's not much left. I would have gone with Ngatai or Horrell.

As ACT said this is a big game for Ma'a to show his leadership out there, hopefully he takes the bull by the horns.

Mather is a bit similar to Shoemark really, knows how to run lines, should do ok outside Nonu.

Big call sending Cruden in for his first start and it being SA...
I hope that someday we will be able to put away our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

Cruden to score at least one try if not two. You heard it here first.

If we want to be a serious contender at the death, we really have to win this kind of game. I hope the injuries don't affect us too much

Yup. An honest, hard working bunch the Cheetahs, but even at home not likely to instill too much fear into opposition S14 teams... at least those that aren't named the Sharks.

To paraphrase Red Beard in the Chiefs v Reds match up... the Canes should piss it in. (This time, REALLY).
